Extra, Extra

  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a 10-75 on Chambers and West Street, a pedestrian struck on East 18th and Park, and a burn victim at JFK.
  • Talk about a hard luck case: "A homeless man who threatened a tenant in a Brooklyn apartment building where he was smoking crack had his leg amputated after the resident attacked him with a machete, cops said yesterday."
  • The Brooklyn Papers changed their name (to The Brooklyn Paper-- no "S"!) and got a new website. Note to Gersh: your RSS is still broken.
  • Somehow the city has racked up a $2.1 billion surplus for the current fiscal year. Sounds like we're all paying too much in taxes!
  • Here's an unusual new scam: "the gist of it was that he was a kind hearted man who was just informing me that my back was drenched in blood and all the other passengers waiting on the platform were too embarrassed and horrified to say anything to me."
  • Youngna has found a new way to channel her OCD: creating a map of every restaurant she's eaten at since she arrived in New York three years ago. She's up to 115.
  • Have you ever wanted to purchase a Banksy painting, but didn't want to cough up the $250k that Brad Pitt spent on his? Good news: you can download and print these Banksys for free. [Via Bucky.]

sigh, usually I leave work before gothamist does. I hate these days when it's reversed.

the banksy images look best when the resolution is at 300. meaning, the art can only be at most 8"x10".

However, since we're talkingh grafitti here, blowing up for distortion also works well with said media.

also, how is the blood thing a scam? nothing was pan handled or stolen, except trust. hrmph....

"A homeless man who threatened a tenant in a Brooklyn apartment building where he was smoking crack had his leg amputated after the resident attacked him with a machete, cops said yesterday."

I always said that crack is an expensive 'hobby'.

It can cost an arm and a leg!.

the food thing sounds like a fun idea. a bit obsessive, but good fun.

Smoking crack is an expensive habit that could cost you an arm & a leg.

The blood scam is far from new... it's been around forever as a "short con."

well sorry if you're going to some dumb homeless asshole in my apartment building doing drugs and threatening me with violence you're going to get served! yes indeed, with a brick, machete or otherwise, cops are way too slow (and underpaid now!) to care

If someone even as so much talks to me or comes to close to me on the platform I am on the lookout and I walk away..its automatic..

I pay a lot of money to live here, and I have to have people lying about blood on my back?

Also, Gersh should have hired me when he had the chance. I thought the interview went well. and I was willing to work for peanuts.

Hey, Matt, I don't know how it is for staffers, but when I freelanced over there it took an act of Congress to get paid. Gersh is great, but if only he signed the checks, too.

I also like the restaurant map. I've got a personal restaurant database, but so far I've resisted the urge to googlemap it.

What I *really* want to see is a google mashup for parking rules.
