An emotionally disturbed Brooklyn man died of a heart attack after being Maced and Tasered by the police. A relative called the police when Blondel Lassegue was acting up at his uncle's house in Queens, saying he was depressed and delusional (he had recently gone off medication for bipolar disorder and depression, according to the Daily News).
The police had difficulty in restraining 38 year old Lassegue; when the Mace did not subdue Lassegue, they Tasered him. Lasssegue then had a heart attack and was pronounced dead at a Long Island Hospital. Four officers were injured and three were hospitalized with non-serious injuries.
A cousin, Chasma Gourgui, told the Daily News, "He wouldn't let anyone take him to the hospital - unless he was forced. That's why they called the cops, so they could take him." She added to the Post, "He went into cardiac arrest and they tried to resuscitate him. It's stunning and shocking that they should use a Taser if they don't know a person's medical history." Does anyone know what police procedure is when dealing with emotionally disturbed persons? There seems to be a fine line between "calming someone down" and using force, like Mace and Taser guns.
Lassegue, who graduated from Hunter College and was recently ordained as a minister through a church in Las Vegas, had been upset over the recent deaths of his mother and grandmother. Lassegue's family says they will be consulting with a lawyer.

"It's stunning and shocking that they should use a Taser if they don't know a person's medical history."
Using a Taser is "stunning and shocking"? Duh!!
And how shjould they change their protocol? "Excuse me sir, could you provide a complete medical history before we decide whether to use this taser?" If we go that route, I suggest that we ban police from firing their guns due to the risk of lead poisoning.
Cops are not social problem solvers! These people could not deal with their family member themselves, so of course, they ask the cops to come help. Why couldn't they convince the man to go? Probably because they were afraid that he'd hurt them instead.
This man hurt four cops with his actions, were the cops supposed to continue struggling and risking further injury?
didn't hurt any 4 cops, maybe touched them....Just a silly motivation of NYPD of the guy's death
Another mentally ill deranged lunatic has been culled from the DNA pond. This is good news. I support the cops 100% because the dumb family had called them for help then neglected to tell them that he's mentally ill. Duh. Double duh.
Oh, and the libtard PC media seems to have a hate-on for cops lately. Therefore, I will always support the cops 10000%.
Only call the cops if you want someone taken to the morgue.
Call an ambulence for the hospital.
clubbing the back of his knees would have been sufficient form of "by the book" restraint.
Sadly I agree with poster #4 --although I would have used different wording: thankfully another deranged person is off the streets of NY. It sounds like this man was slowly but surely losing his grip on reality and no one around him could find a way to help him. It's safe to say he likely would have posed a serious threat to others eventually especially since he was unwilling or unable to help himself.

Sure, ed, until the next story when "man dies after blood clot from legs travels to brain after being clubbed." Then they won't be allowed to do that, either. Not to say the cops do everything right or even most things right, but there seems to be a knee-jerk reaction in much of the public that cops are guilty until proven innocent. *cough* (Sharpton) *cough*

Wow. I must be the only person posting who has witnessed a family member suffer through the onset of mental illness. Comforting to know that people think they're totally expendable.
YAY COPS!!! Taser don't kill, if it kills because the guy has already a heart problem then it is his own fault, why? People with heart problem are given a bracelet I think it's called a medic alert, if one is wearing it police would see that and will think twice before using a taser.
