Rode in a cab from the UES to the village the other day. The cabbie said that the system was installed the day before. It accepted all major credit cards (mastercard paypass works!). Watched news highlights on the main screen and read up on ESPN higlights on the side bar. Paid w/ a credit card. Very convenient for late night partying when you've spent every dollar in your pocket.

Yes please to credit card payment. I mean easy CC payment--not the junk that the small % of cabs currently have.

Is someone new here? They weren't "checkered" cabs, although many of them did have a checkboard stripe. They were Checker cabs -- made by an automaker called Checker. There are still a few on the streets of town, though none in active taxi use. Nice cars, and damned near indestructible. Lots of kids of a certain age have fond memories of the fold-down "jump" seats in back.
