+ The good news? The overall crime rate in New york was down from 2005, at 4.7%. The bad news? Homicides in the City were up by 9.2% compared with the prior year. There were 590 murders in the past 12 months, up from 540 the year before. It's the first year that the murder rate has increased since 2003, when there were 598 killings, but 38 of the murders for 2006 were "reclassified" (deaths from crimes committed in years other than 2006).
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told the NY Times, "We’d like to see no homicides. The reality is we’re going to have them. I think this is a very good year.” A good year, considering that most other crimes were down: rapes were down by 8%, robberies by 4%, assaults by 2%, and auto theft by an impressive 12%.
+ The good news? Alcohol lowers the risks of high blood pressure. The bad news? Teenagers seem to take this a bit too far.
+ The good news? Staying in school may lead to a longer life expectancy. The bad news? School is seriously boring.

Hey, all the crimes you can cause to drop via paperwork dropped, while the one where even bureaucrats can't get rid of the evidence - that is, a body - went up. Hmmmm. Is there usually a proportional or inverse relationship among murder and other felonies?
