I'm surprised that there are so many who seem not to catch the tone of the letter. It's a personal letter and he's obviously using playful banter throughout. Doesn't anyone else here use that tone to their friends? To take it seriously, whether outraged or not, is hardly the point...

well what signature are you comparing it to? I'd take a look at the letters that were published a few years back by a pen pal mozz had right around this same age, keep in mind this is 1981

I wonder what a graphologist would make of his handwriting? Morrisseys self-importance and arrogance is I think crucial for his art and act. They are regrettable aspects of it perhaps, but they have I suspect given him the insulating confidence to be as brazen and original, and as frank, as he has been, and still is. To me, only Jim Morrison rivals him as a lyricist.

the man was 22, if this is indeed not a fake its a great thing to be able to read for many die hard smith fans, the short and thick of it is that the smiths and morrissey are a few of the most influential artists of our age, and even though the smiths broke up in 86 and morrissey is an aging rocker the music they made and still make is very relevant even today.

I love the Smiths and also love long-lost letters from yesteryear, so I'm biased. Yes, Morrissey was self-important and pompous...and absolutely hilarious. "But there is no art here, and I am consequently mis-placed." How can you not love somebody who writes that at the age of 22? They truly don't make rock-stars-to-be like they used to. Sure, the letter is condescending toward the United States (especially Texas), but it's so well-written that I can handle it. It is no surprise that he ended up being a brilliant lyricist.

Not fake - Morrissey was travelling the US, and visiting with family in various places, and was hoping to make a permanent move to the US (obviously, that didn't happen). This was, indeed, before the Smiths, but the photographs referenced were for personal use. He wrote letters to lots of people at that time, in addition to writing letters to publications like the NME.
