The poor Hotel Chelsea is feeling a bit down after finding a letter from one Steven Morrissey (known to most as. simply: Morrissey). The letter states that he will be leaving (artless) Texas to do a photoshoot using the hotel as an "insignificant background".
Of course, legends are often forgiven, and this is no exception. The Hotel Chelsea bloggers write: "Since your letter is dated January 16, 1981, I feel confident you have repented of your sin of false pride by this time. You can come back to the Chelsea and play a concert for us anytime."
Here's the full letter:
We couldn't find any pictures of The Smiths or Morrissey with insignificant backdrops.

Fake? Smiths hadn't even been formed yet, and this is dated over 2 years before their first single
Morrissey is an arrogant twit, and who gives two shits what he thinks about Texas or Americans or England anyway?
Not fake - Morrissey was travelling the US, and visiting with family in various places, and was hoping to make a permanent move to the US (obviously, that didn't happen). This was, indeed, before the Smiths, but the photographs referenced were for personal use. He wrote letters to lots of people at that time, in addition to writing letters to publications like the NME.
Bottom line, who cares? Wait...newsflash...Pete Doherty wrote letters in rehab! OMG!OMG!!!
this might be the dumbest gothamist post ever.
is that guy even still alive? seriously. wasn't his career over in like 1988?
"there is no art here and consequently i am mis-placed." what a freaking loser.
i hate him and his stupid hair too. ugh.
What kind of a self important poser would take Morrissey seriously anyway..?
What difference does it make?
(btw - the Smiths were great)
"What kind of a self important poser would take Morrissey seriously anyway..?"
A self-important poser that would ask that question on Gothamist?
A self-important poser that would ask that question on Gothamist?
see what I mean..?
I love the Smiths and also love long-lost letters from yesteryear, so I'm biased. Yes, Morrissey was self-important and pompous...and absolutely hilarious. "But there is no art here, and I am consequently mis-placed." How can you not love somebody who writes that at the age of 22?
They truly don't make rock-stars-to-be like they used to. Sure, the letter is condescending toward the United States (especially Texas), but it's so well-written that I can handle it. It is no surprise that he ended up being a brilliant lyricist.
"But there is no art here, and I am consequently mis-placed."
Well, uh, I'm from Texas and that is the main reason I moved to NYC. Of course there was an underground scene there, as in most cities, but they were mostly self important twats themselves...
He's a pretentious twit, plain & simple. Next...
Morrissey has nice handwriting.
Does that smiley face at the end of the letter mean he now uses emoticons in his e-mails?
This is Morrissey! The letter equals his lyrics... Don't be too surprised or angry. The guy is just brilliant!
He moved to LA some years ago (not enough art there too?) but lives now in Rome, Italy. He must be happy now. I've seen 4 of his shows in 2006 and he is still a brilliant performer. His lyrics have always been te best around.

We have a winner..!
the man was 22, if this is indeed not a fake its a great thing to be able to read for many die hard smith fans,
the short and thick of it is that the smiths and morrissey are a few of the most influential artists of our age, and even though the smiths broke up in 86 and morrissey is an aging rocker the music they made and still make is very relevant even today.
I wonder what a graphologist would make of his handwriting?
Morrisseys self-importance and arrogance is I think crucial for his art and act. They are regrettable aspects of it perhaps, but they have I suspect given him the insulating confidence to be as brazen and original, and as frank, as he has been, and still is.
To me, only Jim Morrison rivals him as a lyricist.
He stole the line about America and England having a lot in common except language from Oscar Wilde. He could have at least quoted him.
He's pretentious, flippant, and petty. But he's also the most clever, distinctive, and arguably most important English export since Bowie.
Long live Moz!
Sorry, that is not Mozzer's signature.
well what signature are you comparing it to?
I'd take a look at the letters that were published a few years back by a pen pal mozz had right around this same age, keep in mind this is 1981
Why would someone sign their letter with their full name anyway? Wouldn't it be just Love & Trash, Steven?
Looks like a kid making up his own doctor's note and signing it The Doctor.
why would somone in many of their songs make reference to and even spell their name?
moz is an egomaniac everyone knows it.
I love when Brits make facetious condescending observations about Americans, especially when it annoys them.
Morrissey is brilliant.
Come on you Irons.
I'm surprised that there are so many who seem not to catch the tone of the letter. It's a personal letter and he's obviously using playful banter throughout. Doesn't anyone else here use that tone to their friends? To take it seriously, whether outraged or not, is hardly the point...
