I do relish hearing how the Londoners rue the service provided them by the Tube, or perhaps more broadly by the Tube and the buses. Every time I'm over there it seems like you can get anywhere, anytime, from any point, as long as you have your card and even just a decent ability to properly read a system map. Somehow, being told "exactly" when the next train is coming is better than having to lean out over the platform, look up the tunnel, and wait for the tell-tale breeze and/or smell to determine when that next f*cking C local is going to pull in -- not to mention whether or not the breeze/smell is coming from an A express instead. The grass is always greener, I suppose! In the meantime, hope all you Brits enjoy your visits here as much as I have enjoyed mine over there.

Kojak, you should also take a look at www.londonnights.com.

They have some really good deals, but mainly during the weekdays. Some of those hotels in the Bayswater area are fairly nice, too. Probably even better deals than what you could get through Travelocity or Orbitz.

it definitely did seem more crowded this year. plus it seems like every season is tourist season now!

> London cabbies are the best in the world

I hear they have more developed "navigation" parts of the brain. However, my experience with them is that if they usually drive around the City, they have no idea how to drive in Hackney.

I guess the same is true if you hail a yellow cab in Manhattan and then try to go somewhere obscure in Brooklyn.

Forgot to say though - although black cabs are expensive, London cabbies are the best in the world. You need to pass the 'knowledge' to become a London cab driver - it's tougher than med school!

Tube fares in London wil go up to 4 quid for a single journey from 2 Jan 07 (that's an extra 1.9 USD). To go one stop! I was in NY last week - my subway fare for a week in NY would only get me two days travel on the London Underground (only zones 1-4 i.e. a 20 min ride from the centre of town - further in London would cost extra)

And it doesn't run 24 hours! or on time! with no air-conditioning as standard! and I get a seat 30% of the time! No wonder we're all coming to NYC!

"Quid" is slang for pounds sterling (£). It's like saying "bucks" instead of "dollars."

Damn Brits.

I'm looking for flights there now, and airfare is not too bad, but finding a decent hotel for the right price is impossible.

Also taxes and fees for flights to England cost MORE then the actual ticket fare itself. That is truly insane.
