i believe you need to have had 60 college credits to join the force, or military experience - that's why so many graduates have credits but not degrees.

my brother is finishing up his masters in international relations and has a degree in computer science from johns hopkins university. he is one of the officers who just graduated from the academy on the 26th.

according to him, the police academy was no walk in the park, academically or otherwise. and as of this year, the academy is also the only big city institution that is an "accredited" law enforcement academy, and only the third municipal academy to gain this recognition in the nation. this new recognition was much celebrated at the graduation ceremony; i guess it's a pretty big deal.

Has the NYPD really lowered their standards? It seems to me that they're raised them in the past decade. I remember the "Dirty Thirty" 30th precinct corruption case in Harlem where more than 2 dozen cops were charged with shaking down drug dealers and selling the drugs themselves. I recall that more than a few of those dirty cops only had a GED in lieu of a high school diploma.

I believe that NYPD recruits now need college credits or military experience as a pre-requisite. Does anyone have any further information about this?

That's correct number four.
I know of 2 guys that couldn't cut it or stuck with college and went on to become cops. In fact, one is gonna retire in a couple years at age 42.
I also know of one guy who's retiring bout the same age who's going back to school to get a degree because he hates being a cop.
Both are in for twenty and out. One is a good guy the other an assholio.

Something about the education numbers seems a bit off. According to the report, 23% of the recruits have a 4-year degree, 17% a 2-year degree, and 90% have some college-level education. What that also means is that half of the recruits continued their educations after high school but didn't get any sort of degree. One interpretation is that these recruits didn't show much in terms of diligence, attending higher education but not sticking with it long enough to obtain any degree. Now, there are other possible explanations, for example financial problems, or attendance at non-degree certificate programs, but it's still worth some consideration especially given concerns that the NYPD has lowered its standards too far.

Perhaps our friend Joel Witriol can help usher in the age of bagels and kick the donut habit the NYPD is suffering from.
