Fire Tom!

2006_12_couglin.jpgIn 2003 it was a 27-7 loss to the Falcons that started an eight-game losing streak and as the team quit down the stretch it became apparent that Jim Fassel had to be fired. With yesterday’s 30-7 loss to the Saints, their sixth loss in seven games, it has become apparent that Tom Coughlin has to be fired.

This is a team that has been plagued by injuries, but has been hurt even more by their own poor play and poor attitudes. Yesterday’s game was a microcosm of the season. Stupid penalties by veterans who have to know better, inconsistent play by Eli Manning and a defense that can’t make simple plays to get off the field.

Yes, the Giants could still make the playoffs, but that cannot be used as a reason to save Coughlin’s job. He came into New York with a reputation as a disciplinarian. This team has no discipline and the Giants have to find a coach who can get things back on track. Greg Schiano turned down the job at the University of Miami because his family wanted to stay in New Jersey, what would he say to changing jobs without changing his address?

Why can't the players look to themselves?
If Fassel was fired because of them and now they get rid of their new coach?
It's the players that are screwed up.... but what do I care lol My team plays the fish tonight

Someone, help me out and confirm my math on the NFL Tiebreakers Procedure:

None of this will matter b/c they Giants will choke against the Skins, but as I see it, the only team that can catch the Giants if they win next week is the Packers. Here are the tiebreakers for interdivision wild cards:

You take the top team in each division going through division tiebreakers (1st being head to head, 2nd division record) still in the wild card, and then go to conference record. So if Philly ties everyone at 8-8 they still will have a better conference record than anyone, and get the 1st spot.

Then you start again. And it’s NYG-CAR/ATL(depending on next week)-GB-STL.

The Giants have a better conference record than the Rams and CAR/ATL, so they’d be out at 8-8 too. The only other team who is left at 8-8 is the Pack, who would have the same conference record at 7-5.

All this adds up to: Giants clinch the 2nd wild card with a win and a Packers loss

However, let’s continue if the Packers win…

3rd Tiebreaker: Common opponents. They’d both be 1-4.

4th Tiebreaker: Strength of Victory (total win% of the teams you beat). This is where it gets thorny. Factoring in teams playing each other and Giants and Packers victories, the Packers’ opponents are at 46 wins with 6 to play (min and det are 2 win games because they played each twice), giving them a possible 54 out of 128. Assuming the Packers’ opponents win out, the Giants are at 52 with 3 remaining opponents to play (because of dal/phi, atl/phi, and an assumed dal loss to det.) This means to push, two of these teams need to win: the Texans, Carolina, and Tampa

This is an unlikely scenario, because it means the Pack beats the Bears, the Lions beat the Cowboys, the Niners beat the Broncos, and Arizona beats the Chargers, ALL ON THE ROAD!

If it’s a push, it goes to strength of schedule. Advantage: Giants.

Thus, if I’ve done this right the Giants clinch with a win AND a loss by any of the following teams: Green Bay, Detroit, or Minnesota OR losses in any TWO of these games: Arizona, San Fran, Miami (12/25), Miami (12/31).

my daughter just gave me some christmas gifts in a new york giants pail. i guess it's to throw up in.

Mark-

NFL.com has a pretty good breakdown of things at http://www.nfl.com/standings/conference

Right now, the Giants' strength of victory is .437 to the Packers' .317. That will change with the Cowboys-Eagles game tonight and if the Pack beat the Bears next week, but it seems like a lot for them to overcome.

However, if Philly loses tonight, then the Giants could be in trouble because you break ties in the division first and the Giants would lose the tiebreaker at 8-8 with Philly and therefore never get out of the division.

The Giants are adrift ! TC needs to go for the good of the team !

Let me say this FOR THE RECORD:

I never liked the fact that the Giants hired Tom Coughlin. Never liked him as a coach, never liked the fact he gave the brush off to the Giants back in the 90's. Never liked his methods.

I will give him credit for 1 thing only: Fixing Tiki Barber's fumbling.

Beyond that I totally disagreed with his hiring.

Shame the Giants couldn't have promoted Sean Payton or John Fox before they left the organization...

Never liked Coughlin and wish they never had hired him.

And I've said that since day one!

Yes Tom Coulin should be fired he has lost c
control of the team & there is nop disapline.I hate to see someone lose their job, but Tom Coulin has done a horrendous job.
