If you ever thought that military spending was ill-advised, think again. NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command is tracking Santa with the NORAD Tracks Santa 2006 website. There's a live map of Santa's whereabouts, as well as videos at some places he stops. And how do they do this?
Detecting Santa all starts with the NORAD radar system called the North Warning System. This powerful radar system has 47 installations strung across the northern border of North America. NORAD makes a point of checking the radar closely for indications of Santa Claus leaving the North Pole on Christmas Eve.Other detection systems: The Santa Cams and the NORAD jet fighter. The moment our radar tells us that Santa has lifted off, we use our second mode of detection, the same satellites that we use in providing warning of possible missile launches aimed at North America. These satellites are located in a geo-synchronous orbit (that's a cool phrase meaning that the satellite is always fixed over the same spot on the Earth) at 22,300 miles above the Earth. The satellites have infrared sensors, meaning they can detect heat. When a rocket or missile is launched, a tremendous amount of heat is produced - enough for the satellites to detect. Rudolph's nose gives off an infrared signature similar to a missile launch. The satellites can detect Rudolph's bright red nose with practically no problem. With so many years of experience, NORAD has become good at tracking aircraft entering North America, detecting worldwide missile launches and tracking the progress of Santa, thanks to Rudolph.

You can also call NORAD for Santa's location - 877-Hi-NORAD (877-44-66723).

it seems people in africa DO know its christmas time, after all.
So let me get this straight:
The American tax payer spends tens of billions of dollars on NORAD’s radar and defense capabilities, its base buried deep under Cheyenne Mountain, and countless number of multimillion dollar Satellites…
To track an Imaginary Santa Claus going from Africa to North America delivering presents…
Freakin Waste of Money & Time. Do children even give a shit????
Good job. Shame they didn't have the same dilligence on 9/11
The Nomad Santa Tracker is awesome. Merry Xmas to all. Peace.
My children care!
My nieces and nephews care too! They were on the site all night last year...until it was bed time of course (last year they called NORAD really late and the Tech Sergeant on the other end told them that Santa was right over their heads and that they'd better get to sleep or he might not be able to deliver the presents! I don't think I've ever seen those kids move that fast to get into bed!)
It's a shame people like Jeebus just don't get it. Santa is in all childrens hearts. Did you forget what it was like being a child? I hope you have a Merry Christmas Jeebus and may God Bless you.
Children should know their mommies and daddies have to work hard to pay off their presents.
I think NORAD tracking Santa is wonderful and my children look forward to it every year! It is not the Santa tracking that costs billions (for all you BAHUMBUGS!!!), it is our defense system hard at work and I am greatful for it all year and all those who defend us! Merry Christmas to all...even those of you who seem to have forgotten what Christmas is about... God Bless and remember Jesus is the reason!!!
Maybe Santa never showed up to your house because you were rotten and had a negative attitude all the time!!! Thanks Norad...we care!
I think there are to many adults out there who have forgotten what it was like to be a kid.I long for the days when I was young and the most important thing to me was if Santa would visit my house and eat the cookies and milk I left out for him.The world is changing into something really tragic and I'm glad my life is almost over.At least I grew-up in a much easier time...
NORAD has been tracking santa for over 50 years. Big deal, it's fun for the kids.

In 1955, Colonel Harry Shoup took the first Santa call on Christmas Eve of 1955 from a six-year old boy who began reciting his Christmas list. Shoup didn't find the call funny, but after asking the mother of the second caller what was happening, then realizing the mistake that occurred, he instructed his staff to give Santa's position to any child who called in.
