Earlier this week, China announced that new rules will go into effect for foreigners interested in adopting one of China's biggest exports: Babies. From Families with Children from China, these types of families will not be allowed to adopt babies after May 1:
Note that being married means that it's a heterosexual - not a gay or lesbian couple. In Wednesday's NY Times article, Timothy Sutfin, executive director of New Beginnings Family and Children’s Services, explained that the new rules made China more restrictive than adopting from Vietnam but not as restrictive as adopting from South Korea. And indeed, China did suggest that some prospective parents look into adopting children from Vietnam. (Does anyone with more knowledge know if South Korea also limited the number of adoptions after a certain point?)
- Single parents.
- Parents over 50 years of age, unless adopting a special needs child where the current limit of 55 applies.
- Parents with a Body Mass Index over 40, which is medically considered morbid obesity. Click here for a BMI chart.
- Parents currently taking anti-depression medication.
- Parents who have a sever facial deformity. No guidance on how this might be judged.Additional rules that have been reported are that parents must have been married at least two years. If previously divorced, the parents must have been in their current marriage for at least five years. Both parents must also have a high school diploma. Some press reports mention that parents must have a combined net worth of $80,000 (USD).
Today, the Times looks at how the new rules affect the Upper West Side, which has the "nation’s highest concentration of adopted Chinese children, according to the group Families With Children From China." Some people are desperately trying to complete applications before the rules change and some who have already adopted Chinese babies were also upset. Jennifer Maslowski, Families With Children from China's Manhattan coordinator, says, "Those of us who are parents but would not qualify under the new rules are at a loss for how we would explain this in five years ‘Nowadays Mommy and Daddy wouldn’t be good enough to adopt you.’ ” Most of the people, though, are just sad that there may be some children who will not find homes and remained orphaned. We wonder if this the Chinese government's attempt to prevent Rosie O'Donnell from adopting a Chinese baby.

GOOD!!! it is about time folks stopped going so ballistic adopting chinese babies, so many of whom are SOLD into the adoption system! PLUS, what about all the kids in this country that need adopting, huh? there is NOTHING wrong with adopting a Black kid, you know. everyone, get over your racist bull (though you still want that exotic thing going)!!!
Babies are babies, but if you are willing to adopt a Chinese baby or an African one, why go to the other side of the earth when there are white and black kids right here that need adopting?
Chinese children adopted out of the country are human beings, not "exports". Please try to be a little more sensitive.
The previous commentator made the claim that many Chinese children are "SOLD into the adoption system!". This is certainly not true. Birth parents don't receive payment for their abandoned children. China is not Guatemala. Besides, the one rare instance of child trafficking (Hunan province) was dealt with swiftly and surely by the Chinese government.
Thanks to easy access to abortion and the propensity for young, unwed girls to keep the children they haven't aborted, as well as the potential for birth mothers to change their mind about putting their child up for adoption, the number of children available for adoption domestically is fewer than you think.
for those commenting on adopting babies domesticly. I suggest you go try and tell us your experience. I'm not asking for a full report, just call your Dept of social services or a local adoption agency and tell you you're interested.
I would be very interested to hear your reply.
And as for the racist comment, I suggest you look into the Association of Black social workers and ask why they are so against Caucasions adopting black babies, year after year after year.
Damn! And I was going to step out and pick me up one of those orphaned Chinese babies for Christmas.
It seems more and more as if adoption is just like purchasing designer Pomeranian puppies. But all in all, I wouldn’t mind it so much despite the issues overseas adoptions brings up as it will improve the quality of life for the child.
Another thing: Homosexuals were not permited to adopt from China even before the new rules. Rosie will have to be content to pursue other avenues if she wants to add to her brood.

I've read that many of the children available for adoption in China are baby girls, as boys are prized. Aren't all those boys that are kept by their parents are gonna have a hard time finding a wife since so many of their prospective future wives are being adopted abroad? Maybe the government will have to rethink their position on homosexuality, at least for those tens of thousands of lonely young men.
This sucks! I already adopted 2 kids from China and they are the best. They do what they are told, do their chores, clean up after themselves, and score 100's on all the exams. It's like winning the lottery when you adopt a chinese kid. Plus, they are going to be doctors when they grow up. Damn that chinese government. I was hoping to adopt 2 more kids.
While I agree that some of the new rules seem rather unfair, it's true that there are plenty of american children who need adopting. But I always thought people adopted abroad because the American restrictions on adoption were harsher than those abroad. Anyone have an information about the American adoption standards?
You want to see restrictive policies? Try adopting domesticly. The new policies are nothing compared to what's needed to adopt a white or black child in the US. But hey, it's your decision.
Either keep trying those fertility treatments and voodoo or get a foreign born baby.
Here's a book for those interested, Ethics In American Adoption by L. anne Babb.
Those poor kids - by the time they're adults, China will the superpower and US will be a little kowtowing backwater. "Mommy, why did you bring me to this miserable country?"
first "jessica jones" your a dumbass, you would more than likely be turned down by the govt if you were actually capable of pursuing the possibilty, as for the other waywards who comment about " adopting in this country" as i am so sure you are trying to do just that, why not go and make some use of your time and find out just how easy it is to adopt in the good ol' US of A,do that and then you can get back on here and piss and moan about everyone adopting from overseas.
you people are just pathetic.sincerely, a couple who will be ADOPTING FROM CHINA !!
