People tend to buy faux fur because it's not only less expensive but also more humane. But what happens when the faux fur is actually the fur of dogs? Macy's has yanked certain Sean John coats whose faux fur is actually "raccoon dog" fur. The Humane Society actually tests the fur on fur-trimmed clothing from many different brands and retailers and has found the faux fur to be real fur - check out this list! In the case of the Sean John coat, the label said "imitation rabbit fur collar," but it was actually from a dog. Guh.
And what is a raccoon dog? Well, according to the Humane Society:
Raccoon dogs are a species of canine named for their striking resemblance to raccoons. Indigenous to Asia, including eastern Siberia and Japan, these small fox-sized furry animals seem to enjoy having a mate or friend close by. They live in pairs or small groups and have been observed hibernating in pairs, maintaining bodily contact with one another while sleeping and resting, and engaging in social grooming—a rarity among canines. Male raccoon dogs are also helpful fathers, bringing food to their pregnant mate as well as helping to raise the young.IN other words, that fur lining might be from a helpful father raccoon dog! The Humane Society has pretty disturbing video of how raccoon dogs are skinned alive (WMV) - all the more reason they are trying to get raccoon dogs protected under the country's Dog and Cat Protection Act.
P.Diddy released a statement saying, "I was completely unaware of the nature of this material, but as soon as we were alerted, the garments were pulled off the Macy's floor and website. I have instructed our outerwear licensee to cease the production of any garments using this material immediately. I appreciate the tireless work that the Humane Society does and would like to thank them for bringing attention to this issue." Intriguingly, the photograph on the Humane Society website accompanying this statement has Diddy in a fur-trimmed coat.

If you look at the link at other brands the Humane Society has investigated, you'll see that coats sold at Macy's, JC Penney,and Burlington Coat Factory by designers like MaxMara, Calvin Klein and Michael Kors also had real fur though their labels claim they are faux fur.
And raccoon dogs are pretty cute.

Ok, the disclaimer for the video says "pretty disturbing" I have to say that warning is nowhere near strong enough for the anxiety inducing, gag reflex triggering 3 minutes of nausea that the video really is. And yes, i want a raccon dog, too.
I want a racoon dog, as cute as a racoon, but no rabies and it should be more friendly to humans. The video needs a much more serious warning, not "skinned alive" but "alive after skining". I just vomited after that video. Is it too much to ask for 1 sec taking a hammer to the racoon dog's head?
I wish I had the stomach to educate people with these kinds of videos... but I can't watch them. Just the idea of what might be on there (from others' comments) will haunt me for days. :(

Yeah, we work with the HSUS and I have to process and post these videos online. Honestly, I'm usually in tears or nauseated at the end of the day's job. Awful awful awful.
