Pencil This In

The big holiday weekend is upon, and the pickins are slim, here are some things to keep you busy while you start your holiday vacation...

2006_12_arts_pierces.jpgMUSIC: The Mooney Suzuki and The Pierces play Maxwell's tonight. The Pierces are just back from a UK tour with Albert Hammond Jr., the duo is backed up by a pretty solid band consisting of: Russell Simins (drums – Jon Spencer Blues Explosion), Sammy James Jr. (bass – lead singer of The Mooney Suzuki) and Shannon Ferguson (guitar – Longwave). If you miss them this time around, they are back January 5th for a Mercury Lounge show.

Meanwhile, at Union Hall, Subinev is hosting a holiday party with plenty of sonic treats. Mussels, El Jezel, Alina Simone and Tim Williams will provide the entertainment, along with mistletoe and alcohol.

THEATER: The Pearl Theatre’s revival of Shaw’s Arms and the Man, which parodies romantic ideas of war and love, closes tonight. The Times praised the show for relying on Shaw’s humor, “which percolates along nicely.” Set in Bulgaria in the 1880’s, the review also noted that “poor Bulgaria comes in for some bashing that weirdly puts this play in the lineage that led to the Kazakhstan-mocking Borat movie.” It's said that when the play opened to standing ovations in 1894, Shaw took the stage and famously quipped, “I like sex.” - John Del Signore

Saturday // 8pm // The Pearl Theatre Company [80 St. Marks Place] // Ticket prices vary

MOVIE: The last of the MoMA "Made in New York" movies is this weekend - and it's a good one. Big, the movie that made you want a giant piano that you could play with your feet, the movie that made you seek out a Zoltar machine so you could make a wish, too...and of course the movie that launched a thousand movies just like it (13 Going on 30, anyone?).

Saturday // Noon // Museum of Modern Art [11 W 53 St] // Free with museum admission, $10 without
