NYPD Tries to Catch Some Shoppers and Tourists

2006_12_policenet.gif

It's crazy holiday congestion time when the NYPD starting hauling out mesh netting to control crowds. But, really, when there's a teeming mass of insane people in Midtown who want to see the Rockettes or attempt to buy a Wii or see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree, is mesh enough? We know the police is under scrutiny over brutality, but cattle prods anyone?

  • Wouldn't it be easier to use the steel gates and blue NYPD saw horses? they seem to work fine for protests and parades.

    i say gas 'em

Ray Kelly's been jonesing bad for snagging himself some more unwary pedestrians - guess the hold up with the DNC choosing between Denver and NYC for the 2008 conventions sent him over the edge, and he just had to get some cops out there with his favorite shiny orange toy.

  • Must've had a cyclist sighting.

  • Automocar

How about closing midtown to all but commercial delivery traffic and cabs? Nah, the pedestrians are the problem.

  • Kojak

So what exactly can these nets do that regular police barricades can’t?

  • mike

    This is really, really stupid.

  • bobo

Can this possibly be the worst use of resources and taxpayer money? That first pic has 5 guys with their thumb up their ass making a paycheck. Wait a minute - where do I sign up?

  • rookie crookie

Get a closer look at the pictures.

I believe those nets are actully being deployed. And, look at the cops faces as they are holding them up.

  • ck

Ahh, I remember those nets well from the RNC in 2004. I can only hope they are using them more as a living guardrail/barrier instead of blind round-up tools again.

  • Stupiduseofrecources

Those idiots with nets will cause more problems than those that would normaly exist.

Meanwhile someone is actually becoming a victim of real crime somewhere in the city.

  • agent orange crush

Yeah, Pedestrians are the killers and troublemakers in this city.

Where's the netting for cars? hit and runs, drunk drivers, cell phone drivers?

MORE proof Bloomberg does not care about regular people.

by the way, is he on vacation again? in the virgin Islands perhaps, ohhhhhh gotya, bermuda.
