Extra, Extra

  1. An all-Brooklyn edition today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a car struck two pedestrians in Williamsburg, an all hands call in Greenpoint, and a big traffic accident on the Kosciusko Bridge.
  2. Tony at PFAW wrote in to say "More than 50% of New Yorkers failed a simulated 10-question naturalization exam—composed of questions recently released by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services—according to a survey of nearly 250 people held in City Hall Park over a three-day period. Respondents averaged a failing 5.4 correct answers per exam." And they provide a handy link to a sample test if you want to test your own skills.
  3. The last mechanical parking meter was "withdrawn from service at 10:25am today"-- the meter was located at W10th and Surf Ave in Coney Island. We mourn your passing, old friend!
  4. Despite a rash of recent bike-vs-car accidents on the West Side Highway, the company that runs the Chelsea Piers has applied for another driveway crossing the bike lane.
  5. "Animal-rights terrorists" have declared war on Pom pomegranate juice-- they say Pom has been killing mice and rabbits. Their plan is to contaminate "487 bottles" of juice in order to cause "diarrhea, vomiting and headaches."
  6. Brooklynite Jerry "Nikko" Cooke has been given up for dead on Mount Hood in Oregon, nine days after he disappeared with two other climbers.
  7. Rudy Giuliani has set up a website in support of his 2008 presidential bid-- and has started fundraising-- but at this point, he says he still hasn't made up his mind about whether to run.
  8. The MTA has begun using Dr. Seuss' The Grinch in a series of ads promoting good subway behavior: "Hey! What's all the shoving? Where were you raised? Try a little tenderness -- You'll be amazed. When the doors open up, Let the passengers through -- Listen, If I can be civilized, Then so can you!"

I could pass the naturalization test with flying colors. Sweet!

OK Joe. I'm coming over to your place with some Pom.

Those 10 question tests are pretty easy. Who were they asking?

user-pic

POM has a safety seal button so it should be ok.

To travel by subway
is really a drag
who's touching my tushy?
who's grabbing my bag?

I try to be pleasant
a smile on my face
but don't rub me wrong
or I'll pull out the mace

Now let me get off
you're blocking the door
and better be quick...
you son of a whore

Ans so off I go
and kinder gentler NYer
say hi to your sis
man wish I could pork 'er

nice 6 outta 8
they were probably asking american born people. immigrants know more.

you know, the naturalization test is wrong. that's kind of sad. the 110th congress hasn't started yet, so hastert is still speaker and frist is still majority leader. gosh, don't jump the gun!

How many kids does Giuliani have? The bio on his campaign website mentions fewer than I thought? And how many times has he been married?

Dear Animal Terrorists:

Jiminy Cricket once told me I am a Human Animal. Pls to be taking that into consideration in your terrorism plans. Yrs sincerely, etcetc.

Why not simply "If I can be civilized..."? That "Listen" does nothing but throw off the meter by adding an unneeded two syllables.
