Shopsin's Closed for Good

2006_12_shopsins.JPG

After much speculation on Gridskipper and Eater, Shopsin's, the infamously cult-like diner in Greenwich Village, has definitely closed for good. NYC Nosh got an email from Kenny Shopsin:

Yes we are closed for good. You should read this sentence with emphasis on the last word. My family and I have a strong sense that there is an art to staying small, and humble. Our departure is a happy event meant to continue the success we have shared with you and our other friends. See you at Essex. Ken
(Kenny Shopsin was referring to a stand at Essex Street Market.)

Calvin Trillin wrote an ode of sorts about Shopsin's for The New Yorker. Shopsin's was a weird place. You could get all sorts of foods there, but sometimes you had to jump through hoops to get in - it was sort of like the Soup Nazi of diners.

Will you miss Shopsin's? In 2004, a film about Shopsin's, I Like Killing Flies, was released. We're not sure about DVD availability.

ya know - I always wanted to try going there once with 5 people, just to try it...oh, well!

Annoying craphole run by obnoxious idiots. It will not be missed.

It will not be missed.

Perhaps by dimwits who think they're surrounded by hordes of supporters, just because they use the passive voice.

As for quite a few of us, we will miss Shopsin's quite a bit.

Well, those of us who could never claim in-with-Kenny status will do just fine avoiding all of the rest of the other thousands of restaurants that require some sort of vague membership. Buh-bye

oh man: this sucks. i was addicted to the gidget (tuna & avocado on garlic bread).

wow. i went there twice. i had no idea there was all this "in-with-Kenny" status crap. didn't know it was supposed to be some kind of cool people place. i just thought they had a lot of interesting dishes on the menu. i'm sad it's gone. maybe all you douchebags could quit trying to make everything so "hip" and normal people like me can maybe just eat someplace nice for a change.

Kenny is a Genius and a true American treasure. and so is his family, and if you don't get it, better you should eat at effing McDonalds.

Another NYC institution bites it. I pity those who never had the cherry pancakes, the Blisters on my Sisters, the omlettes the size of Texas. Kenny is one of those NYC characters that are running in short supply as our town becomes Walmarted for the turistas.

Kenny, obnoxious? You betcha. 'In-With-Kenny' to get in? Hardly. Good riddance? Get real.
