All worship at the altar of...H&M? The church at Sixth Avenue and West 20th that was once the infamous Limelight nightclub (and not so famous Avalon) may be turned into retail space, according to Braden Keil in today's Post. Apparently, landlord Ben Ashkenazy doesn't want to deal with another nightclub, especially in the wake of the recent crackdown and trouble securing liquor licenses.
Broker Frank Terzulli of Winnick Realty tells the Post, "He's going to cut it up for retail tenants and a restaurant with patio seating." Ooh, patio seating! H&M is interested in the space ("triple-height ceilings and mezzanine levels"), but no deals have been signed.
The church was designed in "rustic Gothic Revival style." Little did those Episcopalians know that it would be the famous Peter Gatien-owned Limelight in the 1980s and 1990s. Last year, Brooklyn Vegan waxed about Rock N Roll Church at the Limelight.

Blasphemy!!!!
The Lord was more content with it being a nightclub.
I suppose using it as a church never dawned on anyone.
Well, at least it's not condos.
oh for the love of... there are plenty of churches! more dens of sin, stat!
Patio seating...because it's such a charming block!
Who WOULDN'T want to breathe in the clean air and enjoy the peace and quiet that Sixth Ave provides?
Finally, the ultimate Church for what has become The City of Perpetual Shopping! They can turn the upstairs chapel into a dedicated Shrine to Sweatshops. Madonna can show up for the ribbon cutting in her new fur coat that she's so proud of nowadays.
Then she can do a "surprise" performance!
Everyone sing the praises of her new H & M clothing line!
(And her adopted son is spared the possibility of working in an Africa-based sweatshop. Hallelujah, it's a miracle!)
All Hail H & M!
To the public relations director that is already working to make this happen...
You don't have to thank me, your soul is enough.
See you in Hell.
Ah, the old "Slimelight" as we used to call it back in the day - don't worry, the mini-mall will fail, as everything in that space meets with disaster eventually!
Anyone know if that building has landmark status? I would hate to see the facade changed.
So glad those two horrible clubs perished. Worst nights ever!
H&M just opened up a store at 5th Ave and 18th (or 17th), are they really interested in that space only a couple blocks away?
Tim N: "Well, at least it's not condos."
Yes.. because if there's one thing that New York has TOOO much of.. it's housing... there's so much that they practically have to give it away at rock-bottom prices...
*eye roll*
Sorry Michael, I should have said LUXURY condos (and yes, there is too much of that). No one seems much interested in building/rebuilding what you describe, despite the overwhelming need.
And on second thought, I wouldn't mind seeing more dens of sin... like affordable housing, they seem to be on the wane as well.
Jesh
Where is Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Choir when you need them?
Dear God what have we done...
I hope a pharmacy fills one of the retail spots.
oh the irony.
"Ah, the old "Slimelight" as we used to call it back in the day"
I don't know what day was back in your day, but I remember it being called the "Lamelight." Slimelight is pretty good though.
I'm rather surprised myself at how lightly all the old queens seem to be taking the news; personally I thought you all would be devistated, heartbroken even, seeing as this was one of the places of origin for new york nightlife.
Despite everone elses rather nonchalant feelings toward it, I have to admit, myself, I'm rather disappointed.
