NYC's East Side Access Project Gets $2.6 Billion

The federal government has approved $2.6 billion in funding for the East Side Access project. The project would link the LIRR and Grand Central, in an effort to relieve congestion at Penn Station as well as cross-town congestion. NY1 reports that the "deal is being called the single largest transit investment in American history." Governor Pataki and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters signed the "Full Funding Grant Agreement" at Grand Central. Pataki said, "This project – underway right now – it is going to open up Grand Central and the east side to tens of thousands of commuters from Long Island, commuters who currently take the train into Penn Station and then have to get back to the Grand Central area."

All NJ Transit commuters are so jealous - walking through Grand Central will be heavenly compared to the gross shell of Penn Station. The project is expected to be completed by 2013 at a cost of $6 billion. The East Side Access Project was one of Pataki's pet transportation projects

Finally we're getting some federal money back from all the leaching they've been getting away with for years. And LIRR in Grand Central would be nice too.

NJ Transit can stay in Penn Station dammit. They actually have a nice area at Penn compared to the LIRR.

Just another example of the suburban and out-of-city commuters benefitting over NYC residents. What about money for the Second Avenue subway??? Let's fund projects that actually benefit people living in NYC!

Hopefully it will come. 2nd Ave subway needs to happen in order for East Side Access to not overwhelm Grand Central.

didn't NJ Transit actually pay for their nice area of Penn Station? If LIRR wants a nice area, pay for it. Or at least clean the area they already have.

The Amtrak area is pretty nice, but NJ Transit has a recently renovated area as well, located on the 7th Avenue/33rd Street corner of the complex.

on bad days the main room is going to be ridiculously crowded. like rockefeller center christmas tree sidewalk type crowded

It's a good thing the 4, 5 and 6 lines aren't operating at full capacity already!

Grand Central is where the jobs are. Unfortunately for NJ commuters, the proposal to connect Penn Station to GCT was shelved. The new tunnel and Moynihan Station will help, but they'll still be stuck with a subway transfer.

The benefit for NYC residents is that it will free up a lot of people from taking the subway uptown to 42nd Street and taking the shuttle (or 7) over to the East Side. Also, there are people who commute from Queens into the city via the LIRR.

Adam, those commuters pay taxes to NY state.
