  1. Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a "boat in distress" at the 79th Street Boat Basin, several shootings in Brooklyn, including one at Brookdale Hospital, and a police officer stabbed at a diner in Queens.
  2. The funniest SNL short since Lazy Sunday: "D!ck in a Box". Warning, lyrics are as raunchy as the title.
  3. Sometime in the next 30 years, old people will outnumber school children in NYC.
  4. "According to police estimates, there are over 200 gangs currently operating in New York City to varying degrees, 100 of which operate in Queens county alone."
  5. NY1 has a holiday gift guide for all the zoo animals in your life: "The Queens zoo's two mountain lions, Felix and Cleo unwrapped some brightly wrapped gifts filled with fish and meat snacks Saturday." Bears prefer raisins, apples, and honey.
  6. The baby found in Crotona Park yesterday with the umbilical cord still attached turned out not to be abandoned after all! The "passerby" who found the baby turns out to be the father.
  7. The editors at the Brooklyn Paper say that the Atlantic Yards project is only expected to create $15m per year in new revenues for the city. That's against a cost of billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies.
  8. Kevin has a nice piece on Forgotten NYC Subway Signs-- Helvetica is the most popular sign font.

but the editors at B. Papers aren't the only one's saying it.
The ESDC and Times are saying it:

The font used in the NYC Subways is a variant of Aksidenz Grotesk.

See here for the full debate.

200 gangs currently operating in New York City

I wonder if the Warriors are still around.

The newer signs use plain Helvetica but there are plenty of signs still around using Akzidenz Grotesk including most of the roll signs at the front of the trains.

Akzidenz has more panache than Helvetica but that could be just me, because you don't see it that much anymore. Slate uses it on their mast.

From the Gothaist map:

Since when is Williamsburg in Queens, Jake?

It sucks that Atlantic Yards won't generate more tax revenue but again, why are we always picking on the biggest target. Thousands of million dollar condos are going up all over the city using tax credits. Didn't anyone read the WSJ article about Related Cos.?
