Bronx Grandmother Shot Dead

2006_12_bxkgunin.jpgA 65 year old woman was fatally shot in her daughter's apartment yesterday afternoon. The only people in the apartment at the time besides Lydia Santiago were her three teenage grandsons. Although the family said the shot came from outside, the police found a rifle and several live 9mm rounds in the apartment. Police believe that may have been cleaning a rifle that accidentally went off and shot Santiago. The bullet hit her in the right arm and then went through her chest and left arm.

Santiago had been living in the apartment to take care of her disabled daughter. The NY Times reports that charges will "likely be filed against one of the grandsons."
