11 Spring Street: A Look Inside

At 11am today, the Wooster on Spring project will open to the public. We've already taken a look at the outside of the building, and the interior before the painting began. Today we'd like to share some of our favorite pieces from the 30,000 square feet of interior space. What we've included below is just a small sampling of the art available inside-- to get the full effect, there is no substitute for visiting in person. The building can be found at the corner of Elizabeth and Spring, and it will be open until 5pm each day through Sunday.

These are just a small selection from the hundreds of pieces of art on display-- some big, some small. And of course, many others, including the Soundlab music installation, can only be experienced in person. If you're unable to make the show, however, check out Streetsy.com-- we'll post the rest of our pictures from inside and outside the building there over the next couple of days.

Update: we put up some more pictures in part 2 of this post.

this is crap. im very open minded but i know crap when i see it. if you are psuedointellectual you would say...hater. but how about this. i put up a picture of the president and take a dump then sling it at the picture you would be like yes thats art. i bet i would be on the daily show. but its no more art than vandals spraypainting racial epithets on a church and then saying its a powerful moving statement . its crap for all you crap eaters and thinkers.grow up

Refreshing to see someone offering their own turf for artists to create and distance your eyes from the mad shopping of the area, Wished I had the chance to have seen it ,by now must be gone with all the construction and condo flipping going on inside, . It would be great if they save as many pieces as they can.

    purty darn cool work!

I haven't gotten anything done today. I feel like a fog, but what can I say? I've just been letting everything wash over me lately, not that it matters. Shrug.

  • Sten54118

I just don't have anything to say right now. I haven't been up to anything recently, but it's not important. I've just been sitting around waiting for something to happen, but shrug.

Basically nothing seems worth thinking about. I haven't been up to much these days. I just don't have much to say right now. I can't be bothered with anything , but whatever.

ooooooookay, the fact is loads of tags you see aroung are half arsed kids just scrawling their name repeatedly, but these took skill and dedication, designing and practice. They took a damn site more time and effort than tracy whatsit and her rumpled bed - to me its desgusting that people can paint a canvas totally green and sell it for six grand and claim its contempory. i wish there was more stuff like this in Britain

I looked at the list of artists who worked on this project at your website, Marc. How does this translate to "A major portion of the artists represented in the show were women". Please.

A great video about this was just uploaded onto one of my favorite video sites. Worth a look for anyone interested in WC or 11 Spring.

  • art for arts sake... as an artist we are used to people either loving what we do or hating what we we do, people shouldn't get defensive for comments made, the artists can handle it. we do it because it's something we must do, we have an energy that has to come out of us in this way, i'd loose my mind if i couldn't do this. if i knew "why" i did it, maybe i wouldn't do it? rene gagnon "suicide bomber"

  • As the curator of the project, I want to rebut something that cass said above. A major portion of the artists represented in the show were women, not white males. Here's a few - Swoon, Maya Hayuk, iminentdissaster, jasmine zimmerman, you are beautiful, thundercut, prune, muck, lady pink.

i totally love this stuff! in my eyes it is great art! what ispecially love about it is that it is out there for everybody, it isn,t kept in sterile shrines for the refined enjoyment of few. it isn't for anybodys personal profit - though it deserves to be rewarded! these people are extremly skilled hours and hours of learning and work has gone into such pictures. it is great that we are allowed to touch it and it isn't reigned over by snobs.

Some good art, some bad, a lot dumb, but the real problem I have with the whole project is the social devolution. 90% of the artists who were invited to work on 11 Spring St. are white males. Even the mainstream art world has become more inclusive of women and people of color than this, why are these street art people moving backwards?
