A week after her spectacularly failed attempt at the Chinese language, Rosie O'Donnell apologized for reducing Chinese to "ching chong" on The View this morning. From People:
After running a clip of the offending segment, which originally ran Dec. 5, she said, "This apparently was very offensive to a lot of Asian people. So I asked Judy, who's Asian and works here in our hair and makeup department. I said, 'Was it offensive to you?' And she said, 'Well, kinda. When I was a kid people did tease me by saying ching-chong.'Way to set expectations! But at least she apologized (in a way). And didn't say "solly." Or mention anything about "no tickee, no laundry." We're curious about what newscasters in China have been saying about her (have they been calling her a "gwei lo" - white devil?) or whether anyone in China really cares."So apparently 'ching-chong,' unbeknownst to me, is a very offensive way to make fun, quote-unquote, or mock, Asian accents. Some people have told me it's as bad as the n-word. I was like, really? I didn't know that.
O'Donnell said that her joke was "never intended to hurt anyone, and I'm sorry for those people who felt hurt or were teased on the playground," but added that in the future, "there's a good chance that I'll do something like that again ... Not on purpose."
Was Rosie's apology enough? We think it's time for City Councilman John Liu to respond!

She's kind of still not accepting full culpability - how the hell could she not know that "ching chong" is offensive? She also makes it sounds as though those wacky Asians are easily offended.
She should have gracefully said "I'm an idiot, I was thinking, and I'm sorry" immediately after it happened.
She won't be able to apologize a second time, Samantha. She and Michael Richards are too busy filming Mel Gibson's adaptation of Mein Kampf.
Where's the apology?
All I've read is a lot of ignorance. And, she states it will probably happen again.
pulling out the dumb card. huh.
the "apology" still sounds like she is quote-unquote mocking.
Who the hell thinks 'ching chong' is offensive? Thats what chinese sounds like to English langauge speakers! Was she supposed to pull out some perfectly enunciated Mandarin out her ass? She was making a small joke about how big the DeVito-was-drunk story was, and this self-aggrandizing IDIOT John Liu blew it out of proportion. IT WAS A JOKE.
Oh and dude, ching chong is not the preferred nomenclature.
It's always a joke when it offends a group other than your own Mr. Nobody. I bet you would be first on line to condemn someone who made fun of you.
Rosie, a few weeks ago had a fit because she thought Kelly Ripa was insinuating things about gays when Kelly said she didn't want Clay to cover her mouth becuas ehse didn't know where his hand had been.
Remember what they say about people who live in glass houses.
people who live in glass houses are gay and asian?
I wonder when John Liu will pay attention to representing all his constituents in his duties as City Councilman rather than acting like he’s King of the Asians.
why can't chinese people be more like black people? that's a model minority if there ever was one
say em bah paw
I certainly think the "ching chong" remark was pretty offensive. Moreover, I think there's another issue at hand here, which is that O'Donnell isn't terribly intelligent, or funny.
John Liu fights hard for Queens. if you lived there, you would know. Flushing is what it is now because of Asians. It was a shithole in the Seventies.
John Liu for Mayor.
"Wong Brothers Laundry Service - Two Wongs Can Make It White."
who thinks "ching chong" should be offensive?...the same people who think making monkey noises at africans, etc etc
For those of you who say that saying "ching chong" is just a jock....I want those people to say it infront of a young asian american male and see what happens...mostly likely ...your ass will get beat down..
P
I don't think so Peter, unless you have it on tape.
Even Rosie's Asian stylist didn't say a thing, unless she put some spunk in her hair gel.
But then she's an asian female, the most sell out of the bunch. but, what ya gonna do?
There's some really really smart, really really strong real asian girls that know the real deal. but they're few and far between. Those are keepers.
Most are in denial until it's too late.
I was about to say something about making a mountain from a molehill, but then I read the comments and got offended.
I'd like to think the Chinese have better sense than to watch The View.
Stupid fat dyke. I hope she gets cancer in both tits, which then spreads to that rotten apple cooch of hers, then finally to her brain, so that the only words she's able to utter are "Ching-Chong-Ching."
b:your comment reminds me of an incident from a few months ago. i was on broadway, just south of canal, when i walked by a black guy. he said "ching chong" to me (i'm a chinese female) and i thought "if i said ooga booga to you, you'd get upset so why are you saying ching chong to me?" humanity's stupidity never ceases to amaze me. i can't wait till we wipe ourselves off the face of the earth.
Nobody who makes jokes should apologize. No violence-inciting language should be acceptable, but there is a big difference between hate and jokes. I proudly make offensive jokes everyday but I would never use hate speech. Nothing irks me more than when people say "I'm for free speech BUT..." Does it hurt someone's feelings? Awwwww
If you didn't mean to be offensive stop bowing down to these cry babies and don't apologize! Now people think making fun of a language is racist?! UGH UGH UGH
No Engrish is spoken in or appears on the signs of non-chain stores in Frushing
Why Liu no concern about his constitulents assimirating into America’s gleat melting pot?
Hooray Frushing!
Next, Rosie will be in rehab, à la, uh, well, every celebrity who's made faux pas. In other words, it wasn't me talking, it was the booze/ADHD/Vicodin/toad-licking/whatever...
Flushing was a shithole then and now it's a vibrant commercial district.
That accounts for something.
And for those saying it's a joke, then the "n" word to you is a joke and again, say it to someone of colour. Tell them it's a joke.
I'll tell you what, come fourth of July go to a black owned business like Sylvia's etc and ask if they have any "n" chasers for sale.
Better yet, ask your black co-workers where to find them. That should be easier.
eb, I wish you actually said that instead of thought it, but as a female who may have been concerned for her safety, I understand.
What asians should do, as in this instance, is not let it slide. That's what we're 'expected' to do - just ignore it, keep walking, don't make trouble, blahblahblah. If we want this to keep happening, stick to that advice.
I, on the other hand, choose to get in someone face about it.
as an asian person who's tried hard to live in this unjust world I'd just like to understand the psychology of all this hatred. Why can't I just walk around without getting "ching chong" sing songs? What did I do? I speak english superbly. I didn't kill anyone. I've never raped anyone. I've never committed any crimes. I've followed the law. I try to make a decent living and contribute to society and yet because I keep my head down and try to live my life without imposing on others I get this racist shit as a reward? sometimes I think it's better if asians were more sinister and mean and loud. we need more asian people killing, raping, and doing despicable things in the papers so we'd actually deserve the ching chong slurs.
I love it how it's always the whities who say "C'mon, lighten up!" - people who probably have never experienced bigoted speech directed at them in their fucking lives.
And if you're a person of color who thinks "Aw, ease up!" Try not to be such an Anglophile and be just alittle bit proud of your heritage, why doncha?
Fuckin' fat dike. (If that was offensive to the fags, I'm sorry. I didn't know.)
rocknrope: i did think about addressing the guy except i was half his size/weight and had a feeling he wouldn't take kindly to having the tables turned. i applaud you for not letting those incidents slide. maybe next time i'll say something because it really makes me crazy!
the worst i've gotten in recent memory is being called ichiro at a yankees game. they were playing the mariners, but i didn't have any seattle gear on and i don't think i look remotely japanese. it was so stupid.
Bob: Having lived in Flusing for most of my life, I could care two shits what language the signs are. I am not asian and just because it's not written in "Engrish", that never stopped me from going into those stores. (Oh wait, the "enrish" thing was a joke... in that case, it's okay. sorry.) I would like to think that I'm a little bit more open-minded than that; and smarter too. Just because I couldn't read the sign, I knew if it was a restaurant, or a deli, or a clothing store, or whatever business it might have been. Heck, I even have a chinese doctor. Probably his only latino client. Big whoop!
Re: John Liu: He is no Sharpton. Does he like the limelight? Yeah, but he also goes out into the community to do things that are important. He came to a thanksgiving event a couple of years ago a teen group I was volunteering for put together. All minors, not yet able to vote. No parents, no press, very few asian teens. He eventually donated a very generous amount of money to the orgranization, but those things aren't important to the community I guess.
Lastly, as a gay male, I think Rosie is an idiot and should choose her words more carefully because even though she knew it was a joke (and I agree it was), I'm sure that she has many viewers who think exactly what she said is correct.
that's Yankee stadium for you. You'll be treated better at Shea only because there's more interracial couples there.
In fact, you'll be treated better at a NASCAR race than at Yankee stadium. but you also have to take your shirt off to get that four hour Track tan.
There's an enormous difference about making light of the way a language sounds and dropping N bombs for no reason. I hate to revert back to Michael Richards land and discuss if that word is appropriate because Rosie was imitating an accent and using it to make a joke. And to say priveliged people are the only people who say "lighten up" misses the point. We ALL get teased or made fun of for some reason at some point in our lives. Sometimes it is harsh and sometimes it is lighthearted but to cry racism and hatred everytime does two dangerous things. 1) It takes focus away from REAL racism. I will never deny that bigotry exists.
2) It stops free speech. I make lots of hack German jokes at my girlfriend's expense and she never says "Oh that's not fair".
I've been at the end of racist jokes and racist remarks. I don't "brush them off" I laugh at them because they are funny.
I just read C.H.U.D.'s remarks and I just want everyone to hold up a collective finger in his nose and laugh at him. What a tool
#32/Javster
You don’t get it.
Liu is so concerned about Asians being treated equally. Yet his own district is filled with Asian owned shops and restaurants with signs entirely in Chinese or Korean that send a message (whether intentional or not) that English speaking people are not welcome in their establishments.
And ER is a typical dumbshit who thinks getting teased and experiencing racism is the same thing. So fucking typical.
ER, you are a fucking idiot. If you brush off "light racism" you leave the door open to "Heavy racism". WHy do you think the city tickets people for "quality of life" issues like noise complaints and graffiti? It's been proven that these smalltime things are pathways to city decimating crimes like prostitution and drug sales. You want people to turn the other cheek and then when they do the people who are the taunters just up the ante and say even heavier racist shit. And to say that ching chong is not racist is fucking ignorant. It's the same as making monkey noises to a black guy.
That is quite possibly the worst apology I've heard since Michael Richards on Letterman! Seriously, where are celebrities getting their apology lessons from these days? Pope Benedict? Kobe Bryant? C'mon, Rosie. You can do better than that.
You fat fucking dike!
I see nothing has changed since the death of Vincent Chin.
this is why I don't go out unarmed. and if you do stop me, you better have PC. I have a lawyer on retainer.
Yeah, the fact that ER thinks racist jokes and remarks are funny, even when directed at him, says alot about the depth of his personality.
God, Rosie is so damn UNfunny and UNoriginal. Any comedian who has to resort to "ching chong ching" needs to find a new line of work. Steven Colbert, however, is one funny man! Anyone catch his purposely offensive but extremely funny version of someone doing a bad Chinese impression? It's so bad, it's good! And I'm Asian! Rosie, is that the best you can do to get media attention? So sad...
Man, I do love it when non-asians tell me when I should and shouldn't be offended. Me so solly!
Do me a favor, STFU.
"The right to freedom of speech equates to neither an obligation to offend nor a duty to be insensitive. If our commitment to free speech is important, our belief in antiracism should be no less so."
- Gary Younge
"Not only are whites kicking us; they are telling us how to react to being kicked."
-Steve Biko
I guess the apology was ... sorry you people took the joke the wrong way. Didn't Rosie O'Donnell grow up on Long Island? How could she not know "ching chong" was offensive to Asians? They know that even in Wyoming. Okay, she apologized ... sorta. Let's move on. Next time she goes on about perceived homophobia ... we'll all go ... "yeah, right." She wins the Hypocrites award this year.
As for what Chinese sounds to western ears ... try saying "Oooga booga" to a group of African Americans. Let us know how well they accept that joke.
If you Asians don't like it, take the Fung Wah bus back to China. There you will find a billion people saying ching chong all day long and you will be happy.
Confucius say, ching chong pai gow dong. Hee wah, ding tah.
And you can take that to the bank.
william- you are lucky to hide behind the internet cause I'd fucking disembowl your ass.
I'm glad you asians are happy. Now do us all a favor and learn how to drive!
William's mother sucks cocks in hell.
I used to call my neighbor a coolie. He never complained.
Most you people have issues that need to be sorted out in a constructive way, sooner the better
it's always the mindless, unoriginal people who say ching chong, asians can't drive, good at math/science, blah blah blah... even if it's true, so what? your point being? you want to make yourselves feel better in comparison? oh, ok, got it. thanks. point taken!
I didn't know rosie o'fatty was from LI?
That sort of explains it. Guess it hurts when people call you fat growing up that you resort to making fun of others.
people who say ching chong and derogatory things to asians are really saying "I can't understand you, You are better than me in every aspect so I have to find a way to taunt you because I fear everythin you stand for" - that's it in a nutshell
Sorry William, the Fung Wah bus doesn't go to China. It goes to Boston. You know Boston? Home of some of the top Ivy League schools in the country, where asians make up 20% of the population?
Don't worry, I gather one day your job will be outsourced to an asian country, so you can visit China too, if you want your job back.
Moron.
I take Fung Wah bus to Ivy Reague School. Me number one son. Must make ancestors ploud. Sank you.
I hear ya, bro. As a white person who's tried hard to live in this unjust world I'd like to understand the psychology of all this hatred myself.
I'll tell you this tho; When I walk down the street at night I feel comfortable, safe and totally at ease anytime I'm somewhere with or even completely surrounded by Asians because I know how respectful, polite and educated most of you are. That's MY stereotype of the Asian people. If you, me and another white guy where in the same room I'd instinctively trust you more because I'm fully aware of the fact that we whites have a much higher count of crazy-demented whackos amongst ourselves than your people.
So don't let it get to you. Take it for what it is; the stupid insensitive comment of an overweight homosexual 'comedienne' who's best years have gone by.
IF there really ever were any 'good' years for her.
Hope you guys weren't watching "The Office" tonight.
I smell some outrage brewin'.
Bob a booey -- it's fitting you would choose a character from the Howard Stern show as your name -- they use small words you can understand. Almost all of the signs in Flushing have English, but I wouldn't expect you to know that because you are obviously illiterate. Even if they don't have English, this is a free country (or at least it was before Bush).
I hope the person reading this to you doesn't use words with more than two syllables. It's also about time you moved out of your mom's attic or basement and get off the public dole.
anonymass: I saw The Office tonight and I don't think it didn't offend me the way Rosie did, because like Stephen Colbert's overexagerrated accent, it was making fun of people who are stupid enough to believe those stereotypes as opposed to making fun of the people who those stereotypes are about. Steve Carrell's character not being able to tell two Asian women apart is funny because his character is an ignorant idiot. It's the same kind of thing as Gawker's gong sound added to the original Rosie clip. That shit made me laugh out loud.
People are only sensitive when it's something that affects them. Rosie was recently offended by a perceived slight to gays, yet she mouths off with the "ching chong" thing without a care. You would think that anyone who has been insulted would think about insulting others. But no.
so since rosie has apologized, does that mean white people can now look forward to an "apology" from dave chappelle? after all, he has said far worse than rosie.
oh wait, i forgot. it's ok to make fun of white people. because they are all racist oppressors. each and every single one. right.
Its not so much what the commie slob Rosie said but the context...The View is the skid row of Liberalism except for Elisabeth. Another example is what the moonbat airhead Behar said yesterday about "whether strokes are man-made" regarding Senator Johnson. WTF is wrong with these people? Liberalisn is a form of mental illness.
Hope you don't mind my linking to my own observations on this.
http://intimationsofubiquity.blogspot.com/2006/12/society-poriticarry-collect.html
At least Angelina Jolie had the intelligence to not deny the wrongness but deny the occurrence of slurring on the part of her bodyguard. Rosie is dumb and too stubborn in her hostility to be clever.
I never watched the Comedy Network show before Dave Chappelle quit. I just remember him as the guy with the “smart eyes” in You’ve Got Mail and his HBO special. However, I did watch him on Inside the Actors’ Studio after the great brouhaha over his departure from his successful show; this was a greatly entertaining interview. Since his quitting of the show received so much media coverage, I can’t understand why his subsequent explanation to James Lipton here and Oprah Winfrey(didn’t watch it) was NOT given equally large media coverage considering the explosive reasons he hinted at in the James Lipton interview.
In no particular order, Dave very carefully advised:
(1) that by wanting to not be a moneymaker and quitting the show invited an incredibly quick response of intentional organized media lynching with no participation on his part to the news stories and no inquiry as to his welfare by his white writing partner although his former partner did express to the media that yes, indeed, Dave went crazy - unlike Michael Richards who has been depicted in the media as having his humor misunderstood when he is videorecorded using the N word with venom and sadism and Rosie O Donnell who is defended for not knowing that the slurs used to ATTACK school children IN AMERICA has ever been used to “intentionally hurt” Asians but no one has bothered to find a past use of ching chong that was reported as harmless and part of American cultural literacy as implicitly alluded to in Rosie’s excuse - way to go for mediocre journalism
(2) that he became suspicious of the created negative image of successful Black men in Hollywood when he noticed that the people running the industry seemed to systematically put the Black male entertainers in women’s clothing (this will echo with Hong Kong male actors (Andy Lau and Edison Chen most recently gave anecdotes) who have refused roles in Hollywood because they have been offered very strange and extremely self-abasing roles including kissing feet that made them suspect from their successful Asian career background that something strange and intentional was afoot with regard to the devaluation of Asian males in American media
**(3) that he could see from a cameraman’s reaction that he was contributing to the wrong kind of amusement and satisfaction by using the “N” word and I have to agree with him here - there are racists who would love to use the N word with all the worst motivations and relish that Blacks are using it against themselves as a future alibi when racists will use the word and sure enough, we have Michael Richards and the idiotic Jerry Seinfeld mewling accompaniment which only made Jerry Seinfeld appear to be completely without any integrity or genuine decency - the enmity if not the retaliation that this will cause will be justified. I honestly believed at first that Rosie O Donnell’s ching chong riff was a calculated defense of Michael Richards following Andy Dick’s followup of the N word. However, Rosie O Donnell’s excuses and reasons in her non apology hark back to Dave Chappelle’s cloaked analysis of nonBlacks getting off on the N word.
Rachel Ray of Buffalo, New York and Rosie ODonnell of Long Island, New York strongly resemble mean and insincere Queens NYC women that I grew up around and later encountered in Manhattan as well but with sufficient familiarity to recognize. We’ve long watched these mean “broads” and remarked on their inherent nastiness and successful phoniness in the media. Isn’t it funny that Hongkong has made it illegal and subject to arrest to use informal racial references while America is backsliding into this incredibly ugly dumb racist dishonest mindset and blurting out “Freedom of Speech” as their bulletproofing? It’s obvious dishonesty that Rosie O Donnell is supported in her claim that she had no idea it was hurtful. Racists in Queens only used ching chong to start a fight otherwise they wouldn’t bother at all. Now we can expect to see many racist outbursts now that media endorses this as harmless bad joking. But will Asian fathers know enough to stipulate on the very first day of school that racial slurs against their children will not be tolerated before agreeing to let their children attend classes as Asian fathers knew to do in Rosie O Donnell’s generation. She’s obviously lying but somehow her media defenders feel that defending her dishonesty and denying awareness is appropriate. How embarassing for America where we used to pride ourselves on our innate decency. As for the young gays who can’t remember Stonewall and the universality of equality from the gay perspective jumping to her defense, you are her niche and cloak of morality - she gains and doesn’t lose by defending gays. DUH.
Ok, Rosie said she was 'sorry'. Now run through the streets with a dragon costume to celebrate.
it's words. it only hurts if you let it. and trust me, there are plenty of taunts for all varieties of us 'privileged whities'. fat, skinny, ugly, bald, short... blah blah blah. grow up and get over your hypocritical selves.
do we value free speech any more than the muslim world going bonkers over a little cartoon?
'Losie' who?!
This Rosie thing is a perfect example of free speech at work. Our country's founders envisioned a "marketplace of ideas" where ideas would compete. Rosie said something ignorant and stupid and more enlightened people called her on it. That's the marketplace of ideas at work.
To compare this to the Mohammed cartoons is wrong -- I don't see anyone thretening to kill anyone or blow up anything -- do you??
If you asians dont like it, get back on your Golden Venture and go home.
allow me to link this excellent response from an Asian female.
http://www.reappropriate.com/?p=588
I think the key mistake Rosie made, inadvertently, was "ching chong," which conjures up a really stupid and offensive song that she apparently has never heard. She was guilty of thoughtlessness, perhaps, but it come off as just a goofy imitation of a Chinese-language newscast by someone who knows no Chinese. I think that's sort of funny, but I can understand that someone might be offended. Similarly, a friend was right to stop me from saying something with a fake Scottish accent when we were in Edinburgh. I may be just having fun, but those overhearing me may justifiably object.
It's all free speech, certainly, but that doesn't mean thoughtless speech can't be objected to.
Where's Barbara Walters in this debacle? Did she laugh and let it slide or did she try and muzzle this hoebag?
You would think she would have some sense and say something or maybe not. I've never considered her a "journalist". Kiss up to celebs and publicists, yes, Journalist, no.
Her job was a news reader and she's a role model for that?????
the thing that gets me about everyone that has problems when it comes to race is that if a person other than one of the same race says something about that race its a big issue i dont see anyone makeing an issue when african americans say the n-word to each other but if a white or hispanic says it than its an issue, everyone is against hispanics to when it comes to the imigration laws ok lets take a look at that not everyone thats illegal is hispanic, hispanics just make up the majority, i know pleanty of people of other races that are not here legally i just think people of all races are blowing things out of proportion on some issues at least she made an attempt to say sorry and i think thats all we can ask for ive and people make racist comments to me and never say sorry not even make an attempt im not sticking up for her but i think their are bigger issues in the world than that
Here's why, see number 2.
2. If It Were (X), They Wouldn’t Be Mad…
Many of the Rosie defenders argue the hypothetical that if Rosie O’Donnell had cited German or French or Italian newscasters, no one would argue that it was racism. A reader at Defamer asked,
If she’d imitated the Italian language, would anyone have cared?
Another reader at the Gothamist wrote:
if rosie had done it using a “zany” french or british accent, no one would have cried racism. why is it only racist if you imitate a chinese person, yet not someone from, say, germany?
i honestly have been wondering this for years. can someone please enlighten me?
These statements are often delivered in the form of a complaint; they argue that White people are at a disadvantage because they cannot claim racism when their ethnicity is mocked.
The problem with this argument is that neither French, nor British, nor German people are considered non-White minorities in America. Racism does not occur in a bubble, but exists as an ongoing history of racism in America. When Michael Richards made his “fork up the ass” joke at the Laugh Factory, the racism was not that Richards actually wanted to find a Black person and stick a fork up his ass, but because this paralleled a racist American history that included numerous instances of popularized lynchings. The fork metaphor (i.e., equating a Black person with a food item) futher referenced the characterization of lynchings as Bar-B-Q’s.
Similarly, Rosie O’Donnell’s use of “ching-chong”-ery occurred amidst a history of oppression against Asian Americans and Chinese Americans in this country, which had already included use of “ching chong” as a form of degrading and dehumanizing Chinese people. Had Rosie targeted countries of predominantly White people, there probably would not have been a backlash involving racism.
But Rosie chose to demean Chinese people. We, and other members of the Asian American community, have long been targets of discrimination based on race that include mistreatment and xenophobia towards Asian culture and heritage. Therefore, the use of the hypothetical is misleading, and once again, its use changes the subject from racism against Chinese people to perceived mistreatment of Whites.
I came back to read more comments and I read my own and I'm going back a bit. I kept scolding 'cry-babies' but if you don't like it you SHOULD scream about it. What I don't like is it puts people like Rosie on a higher standard than anyone else and for some reason her remarks mean more than the average joe. That joke would go without a second thought in 99% of social circles because people wouldn't find it racist. Obviously, not being Asian, I don't know if it is, BUT I can tell if it has malicious intent. So again, if it really offends people than go ahead and scream from the highest mountain but if every offensive muttering is banned would that really make us all better? I don't think so, but an idealist in an ivory tower would disagree
#28: Chud says: "I love it how it's always the whities who say "C'mon, lighten up!" - people who probably have never experienced bigoted speech directed at them in their fucking lives. "
So white gays never experience bigotry? I'm offended by your callous remark! It seems like racism is the only form of bigotry to some people of color...
As long as people have the ability to seperate themselves into groups and speak these debates will never end. I'm officially never thinking about this stupid thing again. I have friends and family from all walks of life and ancestory and I will welcome any person into my life without discrimination. The rest of you can debate till your blue in the face (no racism intended)
Rule 834-174 of Bulletin Board Posting:
Any post you make in which you call someone a moron or stupid should be thoroughly fact-checked and corrected for spelling/grammar.
Example of this rule being broken:
#56: "Sorry William, the Fung Wah bus doesn't go to China. It goes to Boston. You know Boston? Home of some of the top Ivy League schools in the country, where asians make up 20% of the population?"
The Boston Metra Area only has >ONE
The Boston Metro Area only has >ONEsome
If you want to be really technically, Boston doesn't have any Ivy League schools as the one school is in Cambridge.
That would be number 5.
5. “Get Over It”
Many comments that I’ve read have cited racial minorities as hyper-sensitive. According to them, we are too quick to cry racism, and unwilling to “forgive” the racists when they try to apologize. At TMZ, one reader wrote:
im so sick and tired of everyone being offended. I remember a day when nobody gave a damn. Now you cant sneeze without someone claiming they are offended. Get over it already! call me a craker… i dont care. call me a honkey i dont care.
Another wrote:
F*** ‘em if they can’t take a joke. Jeez. All this racial bullsh*t. Nobody really, truly, gives a sh*t.
Again, this is self-interest of the majority/oppressor talking. For those who experience White privilege, it is hard to grasp what racial pain can mean — they feel it is similar to being called names in a schoolyard, and should be easy to shrug off.
Furthermore, White Privilege in America has come to include being racist against others without being challenged. It’s upsetting to watch those who have White Privilege try to defend their “right” to be racist towards another person. While freedom of speech is grand, it’s hard to imagine why Whites feel justified in being so quick to demand that they be allowed to oppress other minority groups. The question must be asked: why do you feel like you need to be racist?
This fat bull is making fun of an entire culture?
Oh, there is no making fun of that fat dyke.
It (the bull) is perfect. Can't say anything about it (the fat bull).
Gothamist is the the definitive home of the KKK's future crop of young leaders...
My only thought is if Rosie had any meaningful relationships with any Asians, she'd not have said that.
And if any of you commentors that posted the ignorance above had a few more relationships with people who are different from you (or friends in general), you'd realize how what she said is definitely offensive.
When simply staring at eachother, it's easy to focus on our many differences.
It's only when we open our mouths that we see how much we have in common.
Not gothamist, Only NYC gothamist.
You'll see very few comments on SFist. I think it's really deep in NYC culture to be racist.
O'donnell is from Long Island. Probably never knew any people of colour.
NYC is the most racially segregated city when it comes to where groups live.
Look at the Italians, they'll do anything to get away from the blacks, so much so, they have their own Island, the isle of Staten.
Michael,
Use your brain. I was referring to whites as "non-minorities." Clearly, gays are minorities.
Rosie is the modern day Hitler, who propagates hate and perpetuates ignorance. If she could she'd have us killed, segregated/ Ostracized & tortured too. Having a Jewish mother Rosie, you should know better than to target any one race or anyone else for that matter, it's wrong, it's evil, it's unacceptable.
I seriously doubt your mother taught you to hate like Hitler. You are a disgrace just like Hitler is to his ancestors. The show the "View", and ABC, by standing behind her are no better. It's unacceptable and underlies her deeper ignorance and hatred towards Asian Americans and yours if you allow these racial rants/comments, and don't do anything appropriate immediately to remedy this situation.
My family have lived here for 11 generations and yet our children still experience the same taunts. This is outrageous! We are still made to feel as if we are second class citizens. We are just as American as anyone else, but haven't been given the same respect as other Americans.
No matter if you are a 1st or 11th generation American, we are all the same, our families came here in hopes of a better life. We all want love, respect, a good life and happiness, regardless of race. All of us, when it comes down to the core of who and what we are as human beings essentially are the same.
Just b/c my Chinese family came here in the 1800's, doesn't make me think we're superior, or entitled more than anyone or any people of any race or religion who came here after us. We don't discriminate, why do some feel it's okay to spread ignorance, hate, and think they are superior? Why is there a double standard? Don't take this lightly, racism in ANY FORM to ANY DEGREE is RACISM and EVIL, it only leads to more racism. It propagates and fosters further ignorance and discrimination.
Make the Rosies(anti-Asian American) and Michael Richards (anti-Black/African American) in the world liable for their racial rants/comments by donating their money where their mouths are to organizations that help fight racism and/or promotes awareness and education.
Silence=Death, if you don't speak out, speak up and take action, it's as if you don't exist...and no one will care. No one will care if you, yourself don't care and don't take it seriously and brush it off as it's not a big deal. To these Asians I say, stop the self-hate.
Asians who have experienced racism on a regular basis first hand understands, and those who haven't, you've been VERY lucky and perhaps haven't traveled as much as I have in our country, America, or abroad extensively- Believe me, it's exist on a large scale even if some of you haven't experienced it or don't realize it.
Anyone who is racist & propagate it should get out of America, b/c we are a beautiful country with supreme diversity that is unmatched anywhere else, we should be proud and praise it instead of hating one another and causing a divide for whatever stupid and ignorant reason. Great Americans exist, Asian, Black, Latino, White, etc... It's not limited to just 1 particular race, we all bring a magnitude of contributions, wisdom, creativity, intelligence that better the lives of all of us in this world. Ignorant people are the evil seeds that spoil it for the rest of us.
Her so called "apology" is as lame and fake as she is. We can see right through you Rosie, you must really think we are stupid. Stop being fake. If it wasn't for the fact that you buy your audience's love and co-hosts, who would really love you? you have an annoying voice, you're rude, low class (personality wise), barely ever funny, these people just don't realize that you are playing them like a puppet.
You were so harsh on Kelly Ripa too, everyone in the gay and lesbian community in California and NYC I know, which are many, think you are ridiculous and you most certainly dont speak for any of us. We felt this way long before this current stupidity of yours. Kelly in no way was implying about his sexuality, that's you jumping to crazy conclusions, what a hypercrite you are.
It was just down right rude what Clay did by covering her mouth, but being a bigger rude person yourself, you couldnt see that clearly. Is your mind always so clouded and warped? obviously so...
Your attack on Kelly Ripa was unwarranted and stop trying to lessen it by saying afterwards, "but you know I love you(kelly)..." stop being fake and down playing things by telling people you love them, Rosie. You are pathetic, and I'm ashamed you're in our community, as a lesbian and as a woman.
Wow, you Americans are so undereducated. It's a good thing a lot of American TV stays in America, not because we'd be insulted by it, but because we wouldn't understand why they'd be considered entertainment. Just like we don't understand how your people voted Bush Jr to be president. Twice. It must be undereducation.
Comment from China
At least we get to choose our dictators.
You mean like how Florida voted?
Racism, prejudice, and jealousy is taught, and go back to biblical days. Remember the lady at the well? "Jesus" asked her for a cup of water, her response was,why are you a "Jew" asking me a "Samaritan" to draw water from the well. The woman was taught, "Jews" had no such dealings with "Samaritans." Why? because the Samaritans married outside of the Jewish nation and was deemed ("unpure". I'm glad Jesus had no such bias. Jewish people believed in those times they were better than Samaritans, i can only "hope" that is no longer true today.
Hatred and Jealousy is an age old device that has been passed down from (Satan) to Cain)to(Miriam and Aaron)and Yes, our very own Parents.(Bare with me everyone I'm trying to make a point). Cain slew is brother out of jealousy because he felt "God" was pleased with his brothers gift more than his own. Look at how "Moses" very own brother and sister complained about his marriage to the Ethiopian woman. (Numbers12:1)
This is so we all understand Racism, discrimination, and prejudiced has been around for a very long time.
People have been conditioned to believe their race is better than others.
How many white Americans have been raised believing they are better than African Americans. Just take a moment and think about that statement. It is scary when we look at ourselves, and some of the beliefs we have about others.
Statements such as O'Donnell's were mere suppressed, opinions or (table jokes) that leaked out without her knowledge.
Things that are thought about others, but never intended to speak in public. (Conditioning)
The problem is how insensitive a person becomes over the years of practiced, stereotyping of others.
If i was given the opportunity to talk with O'Donnell i would tell her there is an advocate (Jesus) that will forgives us for all our "sins" and shortcomings.
No one should point the finger at anyone if they still have issues in their own life.
(No one is perfect)
Those of you who are wise out there. Which would be the best thing to do or (investment)to live believing it is a "God", or live according to your own plan or desires of the (flesh) and die and wake and find out it truly is a living God and receive the reward of and unbeliever. What harm is it to just live right . We are only here for a short period of time 70+ if we are blessed, these number of years can not be compared to eternity. Due the Math
" A thought for the wise investor." and a Message on Love
"or whether anyone in China really cares."
i don't know about China but in Taiwan nothing could be less surprising than that a TV personality would make a joke like that making fun of the way another language sounds. considering what was actually said, and what can daily be seen on TV here, it would be positively banal. wouldn't even register.
I think that Rosie's comment about having been teased on the playground, was a derogative comment. I think she was belittling that anyone would be hurt over what she had said. It is amazing considering how she feels about homosexuals being teased. Look at how she reacted to what Kelly Ripa said about not knowing where that guy's hand had been.
Debra...
c'mon....... let's curse out everyone...
hispanics = MEXICAN
blacks = KFC (too many out there... can't choose)
asians = CHINESE
whites = REDNECKS
oh, hey! you! do you happen to be one of the above and not liking your social equivalence? when i call chinese people chinese, they usually explain to me that they're not; this is usually followed up by them being born here and being koreans... most rednecks totally ignore you if you call them redneck. but call mexicans or the kfc people mexican or kfc... i've seen these people pull out their hair, eyes widening, and about to kill you... etc, etc, etc.
everyone should lighten up, if anyone here's telling people to lighten up, and I MEAN EVERYONE! after all, john liu is only a result of over-protecting the hispanics and blacks.
thanks #94 !!!!
You know what , when I drive out of Brooklyn there is a sign that says "now leaving Brooklyn. Fuggedaboutit " ... When I am going over the Willie B Bridge, it says now leaving Brooklyn " Oy Vay"....That is quite interesting that there isn't some huge news coverage about the Italians and the Jews rioting or causing drama over that.
I don't see any signs in Harlem that say "now leaving Harlem...Lata N***A !!!! I think it would be great if there were.
Bottom line is that people need to stop taking things so personally and so seriously. I work with so many ethnicities and we have a good laugh about our differences. That is life.
Soon we won't talk to each other , we'll just have lawyers do it for us. Or before each conversation we can sign a disclosure.
Lsst I remember Rosie was a comedian , I don't think she meant any harm. I just think she is used to pushing buttons and getting a positive reaction like laughter.
Rosie has a big mouth that doesn't know where to stop is what she is. This isn't about lawyers or her being an unintelligent being, it is about the big words that could or could not be offensive coming out of her stupid LOUD face. Perhaps if you were speaking to a few million Americans (that could possibly be Asian) you wouldn't comment with that "I don't give a sh*t about who this might be offending" additude.
And it really makes me angry imagining her face attempting to apologize about it. She should shut her fat face.
man...the first clip she said didnt bother me that much. what really ticked me off was her apology that basically said "wow...you asians are too sensitive" like when she talked about how someone told her it was like saying the N word to a black person. and those two girls in the audience piss me off too. how can they even face their asian friends and family from now on...
罗姿说狗屁。(Luózī shuō gǒupì.)
That's Mandarin for "Rosie speaks bullshit."
Rosie should learn to tell more tasteful jokes instead of crude ones that are reminiscent of the racial ones from the last century. Ellen is a much more hip and cool lesibian woman.
LET ME EXPLAIN ONE THING!!!!! if rosie had cited a german or italian, or whatever accent..the HUGE difference is this....CHING AND CHONG is a very Racially oppressive term, because it has a history behind it much like African americans being equated with monkey sounds..or the N word...A lot of Hate is present in these words and to use them again (even without intent) is offensive to many asians...don't tell us to lighten up unless we can call you the names that you were taunted with. Than maybe all of us minorities will stereotype all white people like you. Not every white person is a F*ckin redneck, so don't lable all asians you stupid pricks. And if you never felt alienated because you've never known what it's like to be judged on the color of your skin, or the shape of your eyes...then don't post anything on this page unless you willingly accept that your a no good f*ck up.....ooooooor just have a point to make....hmmm....i'm hungry.....
Sick and tired of being voiceless, now is the time to stand up and speak out. Call me chink, call me gook, we will not be moved.
We may be small, but we are strong. Don't underestimate us.
If you drive a Honda, Mazda, hey, that's from us. And all those damn games you play; hey even the playstation.
Sick and tired of being voiceless. This time, we will be heard. We will not be moved.
Not only is she racist but she's a complete hypocrite. She gets so defensive over anti-gay slurs so it just goes to show she can dish hate but she can't take it.
Rosie has really made "the view" go downhill, she is a big moron just spouting off never giving anyone else a chance to speak.Nobody cares Rosie! ABC should fire you.
Rosie is not dumb. She's been around for awhile. To play dumb by stating that some stereotypical childish phoneticized version of one ethnicity's language is offensive, is insulting to the people she's already offended. And let's face it, her prime audience is NOT necessarily the most sensitive and sophisticated beings around. (Not to offend her audience, but, much of her delivery and sensibility is about the stuff that made us laugh in elementary school - let's grow up - even a little.)
If Rosie wants the rest of the world to be sensitive to the feelings and needs of specially (sexually) oriented people, then, she should try to show the same sensitivity to others who are different from her as well.
Rosie, "be the change you envision for the rest of us."
Yeah, we all laugh from time to time at childish stuff and yeah many of us are overly sensitive, but, maybe we can advance from what made us laugh in the second grade and look at other aspects of what's funny about the human condition.
