Peter Boyle, 1935-2006

2006_12_arts_boyle.jpgPeter Boyle, who you may know as the father ("Frank") on "Everybody Loves Raymond", died last night at the age of 71, in Manhattan.

Boyle wasn't always an actor, he pursued acting only after he left the life of a monk. His successful career includes his roles in films like The Candidate, Young Frankenstein, Monster's Ball and Where the Buffalo Roam (a portrait of Hunter S. Thompson, in which he played Carl Lazlo, Esq.). While he was living in Chicago in 1968, he witnessed the chaos and violence at the Democratic National Convention, and later described himself as a “conservative radical.” He also stated he would not act in movies that glorify violence.

During the filming of Young Frankenstein he met Laraine Alterman, who was on the set interviewing Mel Brooks for Rolling Stone magazine. Boyle married Alterman in 1977, his good friend John Lennon was best man at their wedding.

Boyle suffered from multiple myeloma and heart disease. Alterman survives him with their two daughters.

"Born outside of Philadelphia in 1935, Boyle did brief stints in the Navy and then in a monastery in training as a monk." (source)

(It also stated in the ny times link in the post that he was at one point leading the life of a monk.)

I believe that this article is partially in error. It states, "Boyle wasn't always an actor, he pursued acting only after he left the life of a monk."

I don't believe Peter was a monk, he was a drama teacher at The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (Catholic monks take religious vows).

seriously the best part of that wretched Raymond mess. he should have gotten a spinoff, not Patricia Heaton.

The last time I saw him was on the Mind of Mencia show. He didn't look or sound well at all. I think this is going back to the beginning of the year (he showed up on two different episodes that I recall).

I've always liked him since Young Frankenstein.

"I used to be a gentleman!"

Never knew he was such a good guy in the real world. RIP.

  • "Yeah, that's why they call me the Wizard....Go out and get laid!"

RIP Peter, you were a great Taxi Driver....

  • If you're blue and you don't know

Where to go to why don't you go

    PUUUINNN ONNNAA RIIIZZZ!!!!

A few years back Siskel & Ebert did a tribute to Hollywood's greatest comedies, and what was the very first clip they showed? Not the Marx Brothers, not Billy Wilder, not Preston Sturgis, not Charlie Chaplin, but...

    PUUUINNN ONNNAA RIIIZZZ!!!!

    Rent Young Frankenstein tonight.

Also, I can remember reading that the first folks to get to Yoko at the Dakota the night Lennon was killed were Boyle and his wife. Apparently, they were quite the double-daters on the UWS in the late 70s. He'll be missed.

My favorite Peter Boyle acting is in the X-Files' episode, Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose. He was so amazing.
