Newborn Baby Found Dead in Bronx

2006_12_bxbdeath.jpgYesterday, a newborn baby girl with her umbilical cord still attached was found outside the Eastchester Gardens housing complex in the Bronx. A 911 caller tipped authorities, who questioned a 14 year old girl who may be the mother after dogs tracked the scent to a fifth floor apartment.

The girl, Latisha Burns, was at her junior high school when the police took her for questioning; a classmate told the Daily News, "She looked like she didn't have a care. She was like she was any other day." The Sun reports that Burns' mother is being questioned, as is a 22 year old man "who may have been the father." And the Times reported that police found some clothing in a garbage near a McDonald's that might have had "afterbirth" on it.

The ME's office is conducting an autopsy to determine whether the baby's cause of death was from being thrown out the window. A neighbor told the Times she thought the baby was a doll at first; Nelly Rosario said, "I’ve never seen nothing that hurt me so badly. I will never, as long as I live, forget that sight. It was going to be a beautiful baby.”

What a tragedy. This must be all the evil wall st white man's fault though. Maybe the cops set her up, you know they keep babies in the trunk; its like the extra gun or the vial of crack they keeping setting people up with.

I have a small penis, so I must post a nonsense racist comment on every post on Gothamist.

thank god I'm black. Those dumb white girls should stop killing their babies.

I would like to point out that in cases such as this one, a newborn can be taken to any fire department or police station and may be left there without prosecution. It's not perfect, but hell, it's better than throwing it out the damned window. Or just put the child up for adoption. Good grief.

Where is the 14 year olds mom??? I would think you might notice that your 14 year old is pregnant. What a shame!

I think the bigger picture is 50 SHOTs! we will never forget!

Again, where's Al Sharpton? Oh yeah that's right, he's over on 125th boycotting Old Navy.

Or just have an abortion, for God's sake, so that it doesn't come to this. Tossing the baby in the trash is testament to the fact that this girl (like just about every 14-year-old girl) cannot handle anything about a child - from pregnancy to child-rearing.

Why is this blogged. It is such a horrible story. Why analyze and write threads on a 14 yr old. How can anyone pass judgement on a 14 year old who is a baby.

What about the possible 22 year old father. Dickless wonder and an immature man knocking up little girls. I don't care how developed she locked. She is a, baby still forming brain cells, still growing breast.

The 22 year old must have been mentally challenged. Then he had the abscense of mind to let her go thru with it alone and allowed her to to make a decision that could cause mental and psychological damage. He allowed this because he is mentally challenged.

I hope that he is charged with murder. Send his ass up the river. Carry on!

she was probably shy if she didnt want to tell or show anybody that she was actually pregnant.

I actually happen to live very close to where this tragedy happened and I remember hearing the search helecopters early that morning quite vividly. To address those that bring up racism and foul play...I mean come on. There was no such thing, just a young misguided girl who thought it would be easier to toss her child than anything else. So the baby wasn't "planted" there by the police and there's nothing for Al Sharpton to come and protest about, race had absolutely nothing to do with this unfortunate tragedy. We can't continue to pull the race card at the slightest chance everytime something happens. It's quite understandable that we as minorities do experience profiling, this at times is true, but to continue to use it as a crutch when it's not needed is irresponsible and prohibiting on our part. And for the person who said something about the girl being dumb and white?? Not even the case.
