Crazy (And Stolen) Chase Leads to Fatal Crash

2006_12_cruising.jpgThis morning, a man driving a stolen delivery truck crashed into a building at East 75th Street and was thrown from the car. WABC 7 had the wild details:
- Two men stole a pastry truck from the delivery man at East 74th Street and Lexington by yanking him from his seat.
- One man drove the truck, while the other followed in a dark sedan.
- The truck sideswiped a yellow cab at East 74th and Madison. So the cab decided to follow him "to get the license plate."
- At East 75th, the truck tried to make a right turn (probably trying to lose the cab), but lost control and crashed into Baraonda restaurant at 1439 Second Avenue.

The "force of the collision sent the suspect behind the wheel flying out of the truck," and he was pronounced dead at a hospital. No other injuries were reported, though there were people at the restaurant. The building's residents were briefly evacuated at 3AM. The restaurant will be closed for a week for repairs.

The crime, the trial, and the execution all within a few minutes (and no innocent people were injured). That's impressive. Perhaps it's cold to say this, but it's too bad all crimes don't wrap themselves up so easily.

Why in hell would you steal a pastry truck???

To paraphrase Willie Sutton "that's where the dough is."
