I had a friend that worked as an investigator there, and he always told me that while a large number of the complaints were made by crazy people, there were often some legit complaints. But, he said everyone knew it was essentially a sham - recommendations were generally ignored.

When did Gothamist become NYPD rant?
Can you pepper your posts with more LEO jargon?
By the way, where's that fourth guy and the missing gun?
NEVER AGAIN!

there a few cops that got suspended without pay after a full investigation, but it unlikely and here's why:

think of the ccrb as defense attorneys. most defense attorneys i know or are aquainted with *cough* "try their best" to get the crook off of his charges (it depends on the severity of the crime, if they have murdered someone and all the evidence points to them and they still plead 'not guilty' they're going to prison [with the exception of oj]).

most of the people lodging complaints are excons or repeat offenders. so, naturally the ccrb will take each complaint with a grain of salt. as i stated earlier, my girlfriend used to tell me about some of the cops.... 99% of them are clean with no complaints against them, they're good cops. then there's that small percentage of cops that are bad asses... who don't nec. have a list of complaints, but have a rep of roughing... but then again most of the complaints are from people with extensive rap sheets who think they have the upper hand... quite frankly most of these perps need a good tune up before getting locked up.

Exactly, The good cops should have nothing to fear.
It's the persistant bad cop that's the danger and if the CCRB does not see that, then there's a problem.
Never again.

They arrest turnstile-jumpers on the theory that big time criminals also commit small time crime. Why doesn't the same theory apply to their own workforce?

Wow, no punishment for cops. that's a surprise.
Where's the punishment for illegal parking of vehicles and don't tell me it's allowed per contract.
Thank goodness for technology with Private security cameras everywhere. I'm not talking bout the citicorp cameras but private citizen cameras. The hidden one's.
Never Again.

Several years ago I dated a girl who worked as an investigator with the CCRB. Most of the cases they investigated were of crack dealin' domestic violence assholes who got roughed up by the police and then filed a complaint.

In oher instances the CCRB investigated "false" searches on people who were suspected of dealing drugs, drunk driving, disorderly conduct, and a slew of other violent offences.

The people making most of the complaints are people who have constant run-ins with the law or are excons looking to get back at "the man".

"many police officers are only getting "slaps on the wrist" versus actual punishment"

No Shit

Why can't they give me the money they wasted making this report?
