- Streetsblog summarizes Bloomberg's ten point plan for New York's future-- more housing, more parks, more mass transit, more water, better infrastructure, more environmentalism, more access to waterways.
- Amy went to the annual New York Public Library open house, and took some freaky Ghostbusters-style pix in the stacks.
- Ronell Wilson, the suspect in the double cop-killing on Staten Island, is also an aspiring rapper. Sample lyric: "You better have that vast and dat Golock / Leave 45 slogs in da back of ya head cause I'm getting dat bread / ain't goin stop to Im dead."
- Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: multiple pedestrians struck by car in Staten Island, a bank robbery in Harlem, and the worst news alert we've ever received: "Fatal Baby Out Window" in the Bronx.
- Somehow, a community center at CUNY has been named for Assata Shakur, who, as Joanne Chesimard, killed a cop in 1973 on the Jersey Turnpike. She later escaped prison and fled to Cuba, where she lives as a guest of Fidel Castro.
- Hotel Chatter has a list of NYC hotels to watch in 2007. Apparently one of them is opening on Allen Street. Just what LES needs!
- And a happy 112th (yes, 112th!) birthday to Bronx resident Mary Davis! We think she needs to share the secrets to her long life.
A Brad Downey sculpture in Greenpoint, by Tod Seelie, who has pix of a couple of more at his site.

Given that Lizzie Bolden (the world's oldest woman at 116) and Moses Hardy (the world's second-oldest man at 113) both died this week, Mary Davis of the Bronx (112) must be keeping an eye peeled for the grim reaper this birthday.
from the bullet above: We think she needs to share the secrets to her long life.
In the NY1 article you linked:
Thought I'd make that connection ;)
You better have that vast and dat Golock
Greenpoint has a vast expanse of Golacks, depending on which alumni mags you read.
The controversy over the name of a student center at CCNY began when the NY Daily News published my letter complaining about the name. THe next day, it became a news story.
It's an unconfirmed rumor, but according to reports one of the hundreds of CUNY students who uses the Assata Shakur Community Center actually scored over 800 on the SAT's!
Assata Shakur - good for her. and please leave opinion out of your news posts - even little things like "somehow". it's not professional.
I think Bloomberg also promised more freedom fries, more democracy, and said that he is pro-babies. Oh, and no new taxes!
so, knocking over a ped xing sign is sculpture now? Shoot out some stoplights while you're at it.
Its one thing to name a center after someone like Malcom X - who, while controversial and sometimes vitriolic is seen by many as a community hero. Its another to name it after a cop murderer on the FBI's wanted terrorist list. That is simply insulting to every man and woman-in-blue who put their lives on the line to protect the public.
graffeeto,
take another look at the sign. Does the size and placement look like a regulation sign?
I can't wait for a street to be named, get this,
Sean Bell Blvd,
take that.
CCNY students you keep doing what you're doing.
Never again.

How 'bout Rudy Fleming Avenue?
this whole assata shakur thing is bullshit...the dominant group in America (Whites) do not want her name removed from the sign simply because she is a 'cop-killer', but because she is a 'black militant' whose main goal is to 'terrorize' and shake the very foundation of the U.S. racist structure in which rich whites have strived so long and hard to maintain and protect. she represents everything the social, political and economic elite in this wretched country hate--someone from a disadvantaged group who 'doesn't know their place'.
"Assata Shakur's" place is in prison.
well, graffeeto, you're certainly a bright, observant one. and wow, you're smart too--gothamist should never write opinions of any sort, as it is unprofessional. i want to be like both of you. and little angry1, you're so cute with your factual little grumble. grumpy, grumpy, little poopoo.
let's all hope ronell wilson gets a building at cuny named after him soon, too. somehow.
I think the sculpture is a great commentary on how Greenpoint drivers never seem to pay attention to them...I can't count how many times I've almost been run down by 90 mph autos farting Euro disco, completely oblivious to ped crossing signs.
Rich whiny white people go to CCNY?
Do they even dare to take the train up there? or, even set foot in that lounge?
Go cry to Fox news. Pronto.
sounds like mdowning needs a diaper change.
Thank you for writing about this important news story. Those who support Assata Shakur should know that the student center belongs to all students, not just the crazed radicals who praise Shakur.
