Central Park "Before" Signs

2006_12_belvederesign.JPG

The Central Park Conservancy, the private, non-profit organization that manages the park, let us know about some new signs that will be appearing soon. It's a call to action for park goers to help out: Fifteen signs are being installed with "before" photographs showing how far the park has come since the 1970s and 1980s, with the words "What would we do without your donations?" on them. This is a rendering of the sign that'll go in front of the Belvedere Castle, which certainly doesn't look like that anymore.

The signs will started to be installed this week, and the other fourteen locations are The Dairy, The Concert Ground/Mall, Bethesda Terrace, Cherry Hill, Winterdale Arch, Heckscher Playground, A Park Bench (location TBD), The Reservoir, Sheep Meadow, The Great Lawn, Turtle Pond, The Great Hill, East Green, and the Harlem Meer. And here's more information on how you can support the Central Park Conservancy.

What a great idea. The Central Park Conservancy is doing such an amazing job it's easy to forget about the bad old days when you would wander through the park and all you would find were light post stumps and the concrete skeletons of park benches that have long since lost their wood. It's a great reminder of how far we have come since the bad old days and how we need to keep up the effort and support organizations like the CPC
