Queens Shooting: Protest Marches Held in Queens

Yesterday, hundreds of people gathered for two different marches in Queens to protest the police shooting of Sean Bell, Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield and police conduct in the community overall. A chapter of the NAACP organized a march of hundreds of people from Jamaica Avenue and 168th Street to where the shooting took place, at Liverpool and 94th Avenue. The other march was organized by the New Black Panther Party, which started at the shooting scene and ended at Jamaica and 168th, and offered much angrier words.

The NAACP's march was peaceful, and with NAACP regional director Hilda Rogers Rodgers saying, "We would like to have our young men walk the streets in their communities and not feel targeted. This is a rally for justice and change."

The NY Times reported that the New Black Panther party, with many members "dressed in black military fatigues," "spoke of revolution and black nationalism" with a much younger group of protesters who yelled to "Off the pigs." The New Black Panther Party's chairman Malik Zulu Shabazz told them, "Today we begin a boycott of nonblack businesses, or rather white businesses, that support a white power structure, that supports the police that is killing us. We are going to take the streets, take blacks out of these stores and prevent them from buying their own destruction." Marchers, including members of both the Bloods and Crips, also entered stores not owned by blacks, like Old Navy and Conway.

A friend of Sean Bell's said he was jumped by cops on Tuesday. According to the Daily News, Terry McKenzie said the police asked him about Bell and showed him photographs of different men, "I was a close friend of Sean. I'm mourning over that, and for this to happen is crazy." But the cops say McKenzie was taken in because he was "carrying 53 vials of crack cocaine," which he denies.

wow, way to fuel racial tension :\

i think the thing to do is impose severe restrictions on police powers in the city of new york.

for example, how is it that they can impose a ban on our constitutional rights to assemble without going through council?

or why can they just go padlocking nightlife businesses, threatening people's livelihoods as part of a war on culture?

don't get me wrong, the current homicide rate is nothing short of astounding and great for New York, but when cops are committing homicide, perhaps they ought to be reeled in.

Could this be anymore racist?: *"Today we begin a boycott of nonblack businesses, or rather white businesses, that support a white power structure...*

Not only is it a racist statment it's also hypocritical. not paying taxes, driving cars, buying gas, buying produce, traveling, communting, not working would be just as or more effective in stopping this so called "white power structure". hey! why don't we throw in voting as well... don't vote in the next election, that'll stop those cops. nonsense!

retrictions on police activity is a very bad idea. the police and federal agencies enforce the law which in turn enforces the very basis of the consitution, your constitutional rights... your civil rights.

on an unrelated note:
nightclubs get padlocked becuase they do not enforce illegal activity in their clubs such as drugs (mostly controlled substances). Why should my livlihood be threatened and mocked by the gangs of armed drug dealers flowing like water in your club? it shouldn't and that is why clubs get padlocked, the activity within is illegal—and so be it. it surely does not hurt the economy.

many of these clubs are cash businesses and offer no real incentive to commerce. they're constantly under the watchful eye of the treasury department (secret service and irs) for tax evasion and sometimes in isolated cases, credit card fraud, money laudering and racketeering) which drains money from your pockets into the federal piggy bank for intensive investigations. it's nonsense.

there is no new black panther party -- just a loose collection of people who have no new ideas on how to move closer to creating true equity for all Americans so they have to bite on an idea that came out of a different time.

Whenever the media reports on them and their actions -- just remember the group won't exist in the next 5-10 years but Sean Bell's children will still be orphans.

#3 Don't be so dramatic. As it stands, Sean Bell's kids are not orhans. They have their mother and close family surronding them. Sadly, they will not have their father, but I would hardly call them orphans.

Way to stick it to Old Navy ... which is owned by Gap, Inc... which is publicly traded. Chances are pretty good YOU own some in your pension and mutual funds regardless of your race!

"Today we begin a boycott of nonblack businesses, or rather white businesses, that support a white power structure..."

HOW IGNORANT CAN YOU PEOPLE BE? FIVE COPS were involved in the Bell shooting. ONLY ONE WAS WHITE. You wan to do something productive? Stop acting like a bunch of uneducated monkeys and realize that this is an NYC problem, not a race issue.

It seems that the activists are forgetting that Sean Bell nearly ran over a police officer and rammed into their undercover van twice. He was in a sleazy club known for beng a source of prostitution and drugs. He was with people who were fighting over a woman who refused to let them gang-bang her. A fight was breaking out, and someone was armed. I am not saying his shooting was justified, but the cops' response is understandable, given the circumstances. Sean Bell and his friends were certainly no angels. Sounds mean, but his widowed fiancee is probably better off without him.

DING DING DING DING!!!! What do have for her Johnny?

Lets face it the cops were dumb and thoughtless! Why didnt they just let the drive by shooting occur and let some body else get killed and this entire story would be a whole turnaround. They wouldve caught up with them sooner or later on the drug bust anyway. I wonder who would be the victims then. Dumb move by NYPD especially with the history behind Kalua's. His friends didnt make the situation much positive by shouting "Yo go get my gun".
RIP sean bell
