Off-duty Cop Shot by Girlfriend Cop

guns-redcards.jpgFurther evidence this morning that drinking and loaded guns aren't such a good idea. NYPD sergeant Kevin Finnegan was accidentally shot in the back by his girlfriend, housing police officer Carmen Nieves, after a drinking game in the upstate house they rented for the weekend. The Daily News reports that both were drunk after playing card games that involved drinking.

It is believed that Nieves was trying to secure the gun, which belonged to Finnigan and was not an NYPD service weapon, as the couple walked upstairs to go to bed. The gun went off and hit Finnigan in the upper back. He is in stable condition at Poughkeepsie hospital. No charges were filed.

No mention was made of which drinking game was being played, but Gothamist likes to imagine it was Cops and Robbers even if there weren't enough players.

This is the new Gothamist troll technique, though. (Like the jerk who claimed his Dad was disemboweled in the Union Square teen riot.) Expect protestations about any joke connected to a serious event for the next month or so.

edEx said it more succinctly than I could. If the cop had been shot in the line of duty or was gravely injured I certainly wouldn't have made a sarcastic remark. That he was shot while any number of basic gun safety rules were being violated seems worthy of criticism.

  • stable condition means he's alive and well. he will survive the shooting. and the joke was just. two trained police officers knowing that drinking and guns do not mix is worthy of jab in jest.

OH pardon moi, oh great one.

then I'll give the standard reply from all you insensitve dolts.

    Darwism at work, How's that?

Why shouldn't he? A human being was shot; it's not a laughing matter, and the victim could die.

  • wyatt Burp

    Um, they were both drunk.

Why shouldn't the author make a joke when it was irresponsible gun handling that caused this "accident"?

There's a reason why alcohol and guns don't mix.

  • John

A cop gets shot and you joke about the game he and the person who shot him were playing.

  • Joe

Thanks for the correction. I misread the News article.

You would think that police officers, trained in gun safety, would be more careful.

  • Nice job. Liquor and Guns.

There is no hospital in poughkeepsie called "poughkeepsie hospital". it's either St. Francis or Vassar Hospital.
