Extra, Extra

- Today is an all Brooklyn edition of the Gothamist Newsmap: a multiple murder suicide at the Walt Whitman Housing Project in Fort Greene, a bomb threat on Meserole Avenue in Brooklyn, and at fire on St. James Place in Park Slope.
- Most amusing Craigslist Missed Connection EVER: "I vomited in the bakery and you asked me if I was ok - m4w - 27 I answered that it must have been the tacos I had eaten the previous day. You smile, I left in shame, feeling rather rancid. But maybe from this sorta awkward beginning, friendship or more can bloom? I am familiar with all Apple products, and own a Wii. Let's talk about it."
- Streetsblog has video from the Eric Ng Memorial Ride yesterday-- over 100 cyclists showed up honor his memory and voice their outrage over his death.
- The Bronx has an unemployment rate of 5.5%, which is the highest in the state. Only 15% of its residents have bachelor's degrees.
- Some more surprising economic news: many mobsters are broke. They're derided as "brokesters" by their criminal associates (can you imagine the mobster "Your momma" jokes?).
- And finally, some very sad news from Phillyist: Star Foster, our co-editor there, passed away suddenly this morning. We'll have more information soon-- but right now, we want to express our condolences to her family and friends. Star was a great colleague and a wonderful person, and she'll be missed very much by all of us.
Revere Sugar Factory, by lachance on Flickr. Gowanus Lounge is reporting that demolition of the dome began today, but is progressing slower than expected.

Jake--thank you for the kind words. Star was an amazing person, someone who I can't help but feel lucky to have known. We all miss her already.
Go home and tell someone you care about how much you love them.
The key point about the Bronx unemployment rate, which the article touches upon, is that the effective rate is far in excess of 5.5% if you count people who've dropped out of the job market entirely. I would guess it's two or three times the stated rate.
great
I'm very sorry for your loss. Losing a colleague / friend is always very, very hard.
Sounds like the Bronx could use a couple of Wal-Marts for jobs and lower prices.
