The Yankees needed another pitcher and they got one they knew well. Andy Pettitte is coming back to the Bronx, a move that should make Yankees’ fans very happy.
It also makes the team better. With questions about Randy Johnson’s back and Carl Pavano’s heart, the Yankees faced the prospect of entering the season with more question marks than pitchers in their rotation. No longer, now they know they will have a 1-2-3 of Wang, Mussina and Pettitte, one of the better combinations in the American League. And, his return also could pave the way for Roger Clemens coming back to the team as well.
With the return of Pettitte, the Yankees have one more sentimental decision to make, should they bring back Bernie Williams? They already have four outfielders, but they might be tempted to bring Bernie back for one last season. Bernie had a much better 2006 than 2005, but he is 38 and very limited defensively.
But those are questions for another day, for now fans can dig into their closet and get their #46 jerseys out again. Only a little more than two months until pitchers and catchers report!

An early Xmas present for us Bomber Faithful. I don't think it's unreasonable to pencil Pettite in along with Wang, Mussina and Johnson for at least 15 wins apiece. Depending on the 5th starter (I'll believe it's Pavano when I not only see it but read it the next day in the boxscores) with a strong pen that's a plus rotation in the AL. Big If might be Pettite's ability to still go deep into games, particularly against AL lineups again. But overall a good move considering the field of candidates to pick from. As for Bernie, I'd like to see him have one more year like last for NY, then retire hopefully with one more ring. Both are Yankees for life and should retire as such. Amen.
Great signing for the Yanks and a bargain considering the awful contracts being handed out this season.
As for Bernie, the Yankees should sign him for as many years as he wants to play.
Its not really the sentiment. Pettite is definitely at the end of their career, but the Yankees' pitching prospects are about a year away from the big leagues, and there is or was a big hole in the starting rotation. And there was next to nothing available in terms of starting pitching in the free agent market. They don't need Pettite to even be in the same form he was last year for this to be a smart move.
The only real alternative was to trade Alex Rodriguez for a good starting pitcher. Many Yankees fans would have like to see that, but the way A-Rod's contract was structured (by the Rangers) makes that almost impossible.
it's racist of the Yankees to sign the caucasian pettite but not the black hispanic bernie williams. I demand justice!!
Al would you settle for season tickets on the 3rd base line?
