Fatal Union Square Fight Spurred By Diss

2006_12_taishawn.jpgSome details have emerged about what might have caused Wednesday's brutal fight amongst teenagers in Union Square that left one teen dead and two others injured. Yesterday Police Commissioner Kelly said it was a "planned confrontation": Some Washington Irving High School female students were "insulted," so they enlisted their boyfriends at Science Skills High School to defend their honor.

Commissioner Kelly also suggested that the fight could have been gang-related, as some Washington Irving students are members of the Bloods while some Science Skills students could have been in DDP - Dominicans Don't Play. According to an official who spoke to the NY Times, someone whistled to start the fight and the girls' contingent from Science Skills had 15 people "with no plans for a confrontation and found themselves outnumbered." The Daily News reports that the police are reviewing surveillance footage from a nearby store that captured the fight, which involved around 50 teens who used belts, pieces of wood, and bats during the altercation.

The mother of Taishawn Bellevue (pictured), a 17 year old Science Skills student who was killed, said, "I want justice, I don't want [the killer] to die. I want his conscience to eat him up." Glenwood Nobles, who was stabbed in the back but is recovering, said that Taishawn didn't want to be there but was there as his friend. He spoke to the Times:

He said he and Taishawn had not expected such violence.

“It wasn’t gang related,” he said, adding that they had come to pick up one of their friend’s girlfriends. “We were stunned.” He added that if they had come for a fight, “we would have brought weapons.”

Um...

Police have increased their presence outside of Washington Irving High School. Coffee Shop co-owner Eric Petterson says that while the violence was surprising, he has seen more fights between young people in Union Square.

This is what happens when you "keep it real".

There was a huge fight in Union Square Halloween night that I never saw reported in the papers. Bunch of guys turned over a food vendor's cart and started beating another guy with a steel chair. Stopped traffic and at one point, a gun was even drawn. Got out of there at that point, but I assume the police showed shortly thereafter.

Are these people blind to where they live and work? I've seen groups of kids fighting, playing football and then fighting, etc., all the time around Union Square - you go into the park at night and there's usually one or two groups of thuggs just hanging around.

It's safe and all, but it's not out of this world that there was some big fight there.

If you walk through the square you're always gonna get some wise-ass comment thrown at you by some 16-year-old wise-ass, especially on the eastside near 16th Street, and especially during "recess" or just after school has let out.

You routinely see homeless people getting mocked and ridiculed by these "students."

It's surprising there hasn't been a Bernie Goetz replay.

DDP - Dominicans Don't Play

Aww schitt!

We need some more Bernard Goetz's in this city.

who cares about this black on black crime? 50 shOTS!!!! We will never forget!!!

at least everyone's honor is still intact.

again, where's the black community and sharpton to condemn these violent acts? you only hear from them when there's a white giy involved...

their issues with queens is the nYPD, but at the scene of the shooting it was one white cop, two black and two latino cops, but yet it's still racism... instead of focusing their anger on the 5 cops in question—since there's a clear sign of no racism, they instead blame the entire NYPD... what a joke.

speaking of "keeping it real", "diss" is actually spelled with ONE s.
WORD TO YOUR MOMMA!

edEx, i'll assume you're white?
So, you'll totally never get it. Cries of racism over the Sean Bell incident are targeted at the historical practices of discrimination, harrassment, and brutality at the hands of the NYPD as a whole, and their trigger happy parlor games. . "The Black Community" has already publicly addressed this incident, and another shooting this week, one that was not police related, and another which was. I'm sure if someone you loved got shot at 50 times, and died as the result, you'd be pissed too. Racism is a red flag word. You'd have to come up with one better.

You know, I keep reading people here saying that the black community doesn't talk or take action about black on black crime. That's really a load of b.s. The media doesn't cover stories of black folks talking about crime or the problems in the community, but there are people every day who do fight and talk about the problems. Just because YOU don't see it on the TV box doesn't mean it isn't happening.

My skin color does not play a part in my opinion.
I do a lot of reading (not the NY Post) and watch very little television.

What I see here is a community of people and their leaders, Sharpton to name the most well known, doing very little to help the kids in the community to better themselves. After school programs are a start, but not the solution. Sean Bell was a good kid in high school... he was an all star baseball player and allegedly turned down a full athletic scholarship to help his girlfriend with the children. I applaud his responsibility. However, the guys, his friends he was hanging with were troublemakers who have had run-ins with the law before. I believe I read somewhere that he too was arrested several times for various crimes, I'm sure if he ever spent time in the clink. Not the point,

The point is these guys were suspects in an alleged illegal gun possession... the police had the right then and continue to have the right to search and question anyone who they may think has a gun legal or illegal.

It’s also alleged by several witnesses that the police had their badges out before the shooting started. Which means the guys in the car saw this and tried to run hitting the cop and a police car, which sparked the shooting.

Police brutality exists. I’m not saying it does not, but in most cases it's either warranted or not. When a perp does not comply with orders and tries to attack, the handbook says defend yourself in by any means. Usually this means a hard knock to the knees with the police baton. This tactic usually stops the perp; he can then be cuffed properly. Sometimes the perp is dosed up on drugs and more than one "hit" is necessary. Sometimes pepper spray is used and sometimes a gun is used.

There was an incident a few weeks ago in queens where a bunch of white kids attacked a police car and then the police themselves. The kids were rightfully roughed up, arrested and a trial is pending. The cop, a black gentleman was the arresting officer and stands accused of police brutality. It’s BS. The kids broke the law, attacked the police and now call it police brutality?

Black neighborhoods are no exception. I understand the racist view. I grew up Jewish with continued racism and hatred towards me my whole life so far and I’m sure it will continue to my grave in 40 years. I know the feeling and while the police rarely beat up white Jewish kids, I have endured racism and hatred... I know what it is, how it feels and it sucks! You know what? I get over it and move on. There are racists everywhere and to label a police force of roughly 38,000 uniformed police officers and 12,000 civilians as racist is ridiculous. There are some bag eggs no doubt, but not 38,000.

The thing that bothers me about the queens shooting is that it happened yes, but what really bothers me is the community is focusing its rage towards to police only. Perhaps this is an awakening to rebuild within the community and make the streets and livelihood more livable for the community, not the criminals. If there's very little crime and wrongdoing in a community then there will be less of a police presence to suspect it...

Bill Cosby said all of this a few years ago and was labeled a racist, which by the way is also crap.

Cosby isn’t the only one who gets it.

In Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, Wyclef Jean told the mostly black crowd (I’m paraphrasing because I don’t remember the exact quote that they shouldn’t blame the white man for everything, go out and get ahead on your own.

Also, Chris Rock’s famous “I like black people, but HATE (N-word)” routine makes more sense than anything Sharpton or Jackson have ever said or done.

The fact that “Baby Daddy” & “Baby Momma” have become common terms in the black community basically tells you everything you need to know about their collective shortcomings as a group.

Please do not assume that because you are not aware of the many black organizations that work within the black community (targeting crime and poverty/familial/educational/health issues)that these organizations do not exist.
I've volunteered for the past 30 years in Detroit, Los Angeles and New York for various groups and associations that were formed to improve all areas of the lives of people in lower-income urban areas.
If you care enough, contact 100 Black Men and they can direct you to organizations in your area that work with urban young folk. http://www.100blackmen.org/

Also, teen pregnancy in the US is on a decline. The most dramatic decline is within the black community. Lots of work done by community-based organizations regarding black teen birth rates in the past twenty years have paid off!
Crime, education, AIDS, and health problems are battles that are being fought everyday in black neighborhoods. I'm on the frontline, and so are many of my neighbors and friends.

God bless the young victim and his family.

so if sean bell had been killed by 1 bullet instead of 50 it would have been alright by the black community?

Wow, edEx, just tell people to rebuild their community and VOILA, no more crime! It's so simple if everyone would just listen! You and Cosby deserve a trophy.

Back to real life, nobody (and I mean nobody) has come up with a solution that works in REAL LIFE. Face it, your "solution" doesn't work any better than anyone else's, because people simply aren't going to listen to reason. So what happens next.....?

#18... yeah viola... right that's exactly what i meant... cleary you're implyingt that 45 years since the civil rights movement hasn't done anything for black people and the like.

"What have you been doing for the last 45 years?" —Charlie Rose: speaking to the president of the Harlem Community who was complaining about whites and "white corporations" taking over the neighborhood(s).

every religion race and creed has issues within their communities and other folks hating their guts. ya know what? they all get over it and move on. the jews got on with their lives post WWII and infact their entire existence the last 5000 years or so... MOVE ON!

the importance of education and hard work is something everyone needs deals with... they/we also deal with discrimination (religion weight, physical features, disablities, race, etc). get on with your life and stop blaming the government for your short comings.

what happens next? build a community of tolerance that can eliminate the "I'm a victim of everything and everyone syndrome" and you'll be a better person/people...

Chris Rock also mentioned this in his stand up.
There ain't one WHITE person who would switch places with him, And, He's rich.
And, edex should be sent to the ovens. I can't believe there are racists like yourself,
wait, I do believe there are others, like dug, bob abooey, fishtale et al.

"Honoring thy Woman" It sounds nice and dandy . Think about it for a minute.........Are you really willing to take the chance and die for your high school girlfriend ? I wouldn't, Sorry I loved my highschool sweet heart too, That don't mean I was gonna die for her . My father told me as a kid, "Son you focus on that school work and not them girls" . I admit I thought my father was straight trippin ! Then I started paying attention to what was going on around me . People tend to use there mouths to spew there hatred for others . Those "Others" (The victims of the hate) tend to take offense to what is said and overreact . Young people are as the older folk say ..., They are Young, Dumb, And full of cum!!!

nothing I said above is racist, even a little bit. that's the problem, anytime anyone (black or white) speaks out about the issues at hand, they're considered a racist. it's a weak attack.

this is the exact reason david dinkins lost against giuliani in '93, dinkins played the race card and playing that card is political failure.

I am a student of Science Skills Center High School, and concerning the incident at Unnion Square and death of student, Taishawn Bellevue, there are NO 'D.D.P.' gang memebers in the school. The group of students that had went to Washington Irving are in NO gang and I'm tired of continously seeing the wrong info and correcting it. Even when Police Commisioner Kelly had refered to the incident as gang related it was not. The teens from my school had basically went in a group of 5 to Irving High School and had been confronted by about 50 people and this is when the mayhem occured...
