Deutsche Bank Dismantling Begins

2006_12_deutschebk.jpgThe Deutsche Bank at 130 Liberty Street will start to be dismantled today. The 41 floor building's demolition strategy was approved in September, after many years of planning, toxin finding, and searching for human remains (the World Trade Center's south tower fell into the building). The Department of Buildings signed off on the permits this week, but the permits are only to remove the facade. The AP reports, "On Friday, workers will begin removing the glass windows and metal column covers that make up the facade of the building's top four floors. After that, the steel and concrete skeleton of those floors will come down."

The community is still worried about possible toxins still trapped in the building, but some people are relieved the building will finally be taken down. In its place will be one of the new World Trade Center towers as well as a rebuilt church.

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation developed a video to simulate the deconstruction.

One of the towers goes on the site and I believe there is/was talk of incorporating a new public middle school into the building to alleviate overcrowding resulting from the population boom downtown.

Does anyone know the plans for the site? I think I read at one point it was going to be a park and then that there was going to be a tower on it. I've totally lost track now.

They have started and stopped this project so many times because the building was littered with bone fragments.

Please, take it down already. Quickly!
