EricGewiz:
Nick Hornby is on NPR right now talking about the broadway musical version of High Fidelity. Why don't you call him up and ask him?

bthirsch -

I missed the 4 years part - good point. The articles I looked at also indicated he was very thorough in his verification and organization for the auction, so I was wrong in my first post.

There are fairly reliable reports that Maureen "Moe" Tucker has a copy as well (see ebay questions to seller), but it may be of lesser quality. Given that the guy found the record 4 years ago, I think one could easily classify this as "taking his time."

I actually just read some other articles and postings, and it looks like this has been fully verfied independently , and is being auctioned by a group, which is good for them.

Chuck - people have been looking for these recordings for years - your suggestion is a good one, but I bet people have contacted J. Richman before. Of course, maybe not...

"This acetate, which is possibly the only surviving copy"

quite possible that it isnt rare... from what I know, Jonathan Richman and Tim Yohannon (former founder/editor of MRR, RIP) had the most extensive cllections of the Velvets, greater than any memmbers had. Tim had acetate pressings of records that no one else had, period. I got to play them during my stint at MRR years back. In other words it is quite possible one otheir collections has this too.

Someone should seriously give Jonathan a call.

They should have taken their time, had it appraised, drummed up more press and had it sold at auction. Despite the auction commission, I'm sure they could have made more. Of course, looke like they're doing quite well right now... we'll see if the winning bidder(s) actually pay though.

Regardless, congrats for them - I've scored some good deals at stoop sales (40 dollar records bought for a quarter, etc), but this will become a legend.

what do you think the fictional Rob Gordon would have paid for the record?
