There are many establishements in both Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal that sell take out beer, of which most of it gets consumed on NJ Transit, LIRR, and Metro-North trains. The ban is not enforcable, and I have seen presumably off duty Metro-North employees with bagged beer on a few late night trains out of GCT.

the details are irrelevant-- the point is that Sub-urban is probably an outta-towner who (with mommy and daddy's help) moved to NY after finishing college and now lives in Gramercy Park. Sub-urban makes disparaging comments like this as a defense mechanism to try and ignore the fact that they are ashamed of their cookie cutter exurb past in middle America. this is not a drunk driving issue in the least—for godsake the suburbs all have bars with parking lots... this method is safer... working class folk coming from a hard day at office, kick back on the train with a 1 or 2 brews and then pass out 'till they have to get off at their stop... --- now, if the MTA put a service fee on the bridge and tunnel hooligans coming into the city, that would make more sense.

But, now nothing is anyone's fault, some bullshit excuse is always used. If a person drinks and gets drunk and falls on the tracks it is THEIR fault. No one else's, and definitely not the person who sold it too them. If you think it is the bar/venders fault than you are part of the problem of idiot laws/regulations, and need to stoop being a nagging nanny. As for the driving drunk part, people are not supposed to do that anyway... Once again personal responsibility. It is not the MTA's fault. There are 100s of bars within walking distance of Grand Central so this isn't going to put a dent in the drunk driving issue - especially sinc they say there are no reported accidents caused by drinking on Metro North or LIRR. This is like the ban on drinking until you are 21. High school kids binge drink on the weekends because they see drinking as a forbidden fruit. If you relegate commuters to slamming a few drinks in a bar on their way to the train you probably encourage higher consumption in some people than if that person has one drink on their hour long ride home.

this is stupid. why shouldn't the mta make a buck from people's alcohol purchases. there's a hoolihans and a deli that sells beer right across from the ticket counters in penn station. people will keep drinking on the trains, only the city/state won't get a cut and then they'll raise fares. that's right - your metrocard will go up to $2.50 if you try to stop people from drinking.

Ah! This brings me back to college days, when I'd buy two scotch-and-sodas for the train ride back up to Sarah Lawrence (a 25-minute ride) after a day of chain-smoking (!) and studying in Manhattan. But of course banning alcohol on the commuter rails only makes sense, given this city's penchant for removing all vestiges of civilization from life in this city.
