Stabbing at Union Square

Two men were stabbed at the northwest corner of Union Square at 17th Street around 4PM. WNBC says it occurred inside the farmer's market - did it involve fresh produce?

The police are looking for the attacker; the victims were taken to area hospitals; one was expected to recover.

i have noticed some sketchiness in that area as of recent. there are is riff-raff on the northern end... they scare and harrass people walking by. it's disturbing.

wow gothamist, you're SO CLEVER! people were stabbed and you quickly came up with such a FUNNY, FUNNY joke involving produce! i'm impressed. really.

your snarkiness is getting so unbelievably tired.

If your father really were nearly stabbed to death, would be surfing Gothamist two hours later????

is your daddy one of the 17 yr olds?

"my father was disemboweled and bleeding to death at union square and you just make a light hearted joke?"

Passing yourself off as the victim's relative is MORE pathetic than the stupidity of Gothamist's making it into a joke.

I hope you BOTH get disembowled and bleed to death.

your joke about a double stabbing is not funny and not classy. it's not even clever. i expected better from you.

An hour before this stabbing took place, I was riding the uptown M3 bus, which goes right past that area. Apparently, a nearby high school just let out, and all of these mostly black and hispanic teenagers were hanging out in Union Square Park and in the adjacent farmer's market area. That's a regular occurrence for that time a day. What was irregular was the significant police presence at the northeast corner of Union Square and 17th Street. As the M3 bus made its way up Park Avenue South, I saw one of the cops stroll in the direction of the school kids.

My first thought was that the cops were requested to patrol the area after market venders, their customers, and employees at establishments surrounding the park complained about the disruptive behavior of these kids. It's a shame that what I'm sure began as horseplay ended up as murder.

Were the cops who I saw patrolling the area just one hour before this happened NOT doing their jobs? And are there no after-school programs or part-time jobs that will keep these kids occupied after their classes let out? Where do the parents figure in the equation? When I was those kids' age, I wasn't allowed to hang out in the street like that--my butt had to be home and doing homework.

Such as shame.

Can we please proof these articles. It isn't worth your time to think of a clever joke and then not finish on the mechanics.

Washington Irving HS is a blight on the area, they should close it down and move the kids back to their neighborhoods.

it's all about irving high. i lived a block from it for about six months and they're nothing but animals. most of us recall the toilet tossed onto the pregnant lady. when there was a corner store across the street, they'd go shoplift otc stuff from DR and the like, then sell it to the owner right in front of everyone. they do need to send them back to their respective blighted projects. and the joke is damn funny, especially given the lack of detail from gothamist. even the produce joke is halfway funny, if you've ever seen some of the people at the greenmarket.

It's sad that all we can do about violence in this city is joke about it... dumbing it down makes all the sense in the world.
