"Something "very dramatic to the nature of human experience" like employer- or state-subsidized child care? You'd think there weren't countries that actually provide this."

...so that would just encourage parents to be away from their kids even more?

""Unless something very dramatic happens to the nature of the human experience then it’s never going to change."

Something "very dramatic to the nature of human experience" like employer- or state-subsidized child care? You'd think there weren't countries that actually provide this.

Not buying Eggers's modesty. Anybody who imposes that many tediously-written pages on a reader has no humility.

Are we sure the heckler wasn't Cormac McCarthy?

i don't exactly disagree with glaser. unless there's a full-time nanny in the mix, one parent will be home rearing the children, and more often that not it will probably be the mother. for now. with exceptions. etc. glaser may not be dead-on with his assessment, but it makes sense. and it probably seems unpopular coming from an older man from a different generation. would people have reacted differently if eggers and glaser had reversed responses? who knows.

i also wonder if one reason typically male-dominated professions haven't seen as many female superstars is that it's a bit too soon - the phenomenon of women really shining in these professions is still relatively new, and only beginning to generate a lineage of notable careers who can be role models, etc. it's probably not fully developed in the culture of those industries.

I can't really disagree with Milton's comment on women, for one thing most of the other contributors didn't even have an answer

and moving up the corporate lader is so much about face time and you can't do that if you work at home like Egger's wife does
