It seems that the e. coli that's been hanging out at a few New Jersey Taco Bells this week has joined the bridge and tunnel crowd, making its way over to New York. At least 14 people in Suffolk and Nassau Counties in Long Island are being treated for the infection, bringing the New Jersey/New York total to at least 39. While there is no definite link between the incidents in both states, eight Taco Bells have voluntarily closed down in Long Island for inspection with nine of the victims from Suffolk County having eaten there recently. Investigators say that since the initial infection likely took place weeks ago, it is difficult to actually identify the culprit food. But either way, the closed restaurants are being sanitized and all of their food supplies are being replaced. Officials think that the threat has probably passed, since there hasn't been a new infection since November 29th (no New York City locations have reported an e.coli outbreaks, but who knows how long food lasts at Taco Bell?).
.
As we posted yesterday, e.coli is normally a harmless bacteria which lives in the intestines of humans and farm animals. However, certain strains are more virulent, leading to a range of illnesses from traveler's diarrhea to frank organ failure. Most infections are acquired from eating undercooked meat or vegetables - like in the spinach scare earlier this year.
Symptoms (fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea) typically appear 3-8 days after contact. And a list of the affected Long Island restaurants is here.

here's how frank feels about frank organ failure:

One reason E.Coli is such a problem, is that cows are fed unnatural corn based diets. (corn being an extrememly cheap food) These diets change the PH in a cows stomach from Base to Acid. E.Coli that thrive in Base PH can't survive in a human's acidic stomach, but E.coli that thrive in a cows Acidic stomach thrive in ours as well. Throw in the fact that most cows are very unhealthy due to these corn diets, have to be pumped full of anti-biotics just to keep standing, and spend most of thier lives standing in and breathing in their own fecal matter, you are going to have a some BAD meat. Eat grass fed instead, expensive yup, but maybe meat shouldn't be something you can buy with loose change.
i try to eat organic cows/meats
They don't know whether it was the beef or the lettuce yet. I think the tainted spinach earlier this year was organic so there's no protection there. Maybe the English have it right and we just need to overcook everything (even vegetables).
Sometimes when they pull the intestines out of the cow the poop sac breaks and the shit gets everywhere.
Taco Bell used to be good in 1990 but it is so foul, inedible and gross. ew.
edEx, organic may not do the trick here, although it may reduce the "big picture" risk. Any corn or soy, organic or not will change the cow's stomach pH as noah mentioned above. Look into grass fed beef if you are not already familiar.
Stewart is right, you have to cook the shit out of the meat...
