Last night, Larry King spoke to the Reverend Al Sharpton and Nicole Paultre. Paultre is the fiancee of Sean Bell, who was killed in a barrage of police bullets outside a Queens club hours before his wedding, and this marked her first television appearance. She was remarkably calm and poised for most of the interview, though very emotional when describing how she found out that Bell, the father of her two children, was dead. But Paultre appears to be focused on justice:
KING: Why -- this is strange to ask it this way, Nicole, but why don't you appear more angry? Here's the transcript. King did ask his usual inane questions. For instance:PAULTRE: Well, I'm actually, to be honest, I'm really not angry. I'm more just trying to be strong and we just want justice. I want justice. Me and my family, we want justice. That's it. And that's what we're praying for and we're hoping for.
KING: Reverend Sharpton, does it surprise you that she is not angrier?
SHARPTON: I think that what has been striking to me about her, she said the parents of Sean, is that they from the day -- from the first day wanted to preserve his name.
KING: I must say, Nicole and Al, we are receiving an enormous amount of outpouring of love and callers calling in to express that. To Nicole, Nicole, what is that pin you're wearing? One detail that King got wrong was when he asked Paultre if Mayor Bloomberg should have attended the funeral. While we're not trying to make excuses for the city's or mayor's behavior, it was widely reported that the family asked Bloomberg not to attend, in order to avoid a media frenzy. Even Pastor Lester Williams who presided over the funeral service said that he was pleased the Mayor was responding to the family's wishes.PAULTRE: This was -- this is a picture of my family, the four of us. It was taken on Thanksgiving, the night before he was killed.
KING: Were you wearing it the day he was killed?
PAULTRE: No. We -- we actually had these made up, the family had these buttons made up for the funeral. We gave them out to a lot of people who were there.
Sharpton did say during the interview that they would be fighting this incident even if all the police officers involved were black, but pointed out that these excessive shootings only seem to happen in black communities. And Paultre said that she was wearing her wedding ring and that Bell was buried with his. One Larry King viewer asked where donations could be sent and Sharpton said that donations for the family would be accepted at Community Church of Christ in Queens, care of Lester Williams.
Yesterday, the Queens DA's office interviewed Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield, friends of Bell who were injured in the gunfire. Both men said that the undercover officers did not identify themselves and that there was no "fourth man" near Bell's car.
Mayor Bloomberg has derided signs at Saturday's protest that said "Death to the Pigs That Kill Our Kids." Guzman also told the Daily News that he did not want people to become violent while angry about Bell's death and their injuries: "No violence, man. No violence. Not in my name."

he did not people to become violent while angry about Bell's death
did not what?
this is not a race issue. this is not a race issue. it's a matter of good vs evil, right vs wrong, but the media won't tell you that. it's not controversial enough.
>"No violence, man. No violence. Not in my name."
just cut the check so I can buy some more rock. the only difference between the thugs that got shot running away from the cops and the one sitting next to the widow is that he's wearing an expensive suit.
hdiddy, you're probably white, er right.
Did the real Sarah Silverman write that?
Sarah,
The least you could is wait to get all the facts before you decide to mouth off. While you may despise Rev. Sharpton (your right), you, like the rest of us, know nothing about that night.
I'm guessin no one saw the entire Larry K. show.
If you did, you'd would of seen a very quiet Reverend Al Sharpto. He did not want to start a "riot".
By the way, two things still missing that's a FACT.
The "gun" and the "fourth gunman".
How many man hours were spent looking for those items?
of course she won't be angry. She's gonna be RICH!!! If Abner Louima got 9 mil for getting a plunger up his poopshoot this lady will probably get a million dollars per shot into her fiance. Wait, if they aint married yet can she get money?
We are all the forth person, and the sooner we realize that the better.
Nothing Sean Bell did justified him being shot to death by the very people we entrust to "protect" us. Sharpton is keeping this issue front and center and free of sensationalism. I for one have been impressed.
Wow, what ignorant comments from Sarah and JLO. If Paultre had been jumping up and down and screaming, that would have fit better with your preconception of this particular family, I take it. But no, Paultre is being as calm as she possibly can be, and the family has tried it's best to not be hyperbolic. Yet, that's not good enough for the ignoramamuses here. She's only after money. God, you're idiots. The father of her children, her fiancee, is DEAD. Just remember that the next time you decide to be spout your 'wit.'
If only “Reverend” Al and the black community got 10% as angry about this incident as they do about the daily crimes committed on black people by black people or about the lack of parenting that is bringing down their community…
Oh wait, if the black community got its house in order, "Reverend" Al would be out of a job.
Dr. King must be spinning in his grave.
Would you be angry if your fiancee was shot while trying to get with a hooker?
hmmm... sean bell was in between jobs and paultre is collecting unemployment. two kids to feed and throwing a big party. something does not sound right.
This is turning into something the city doesn't need . If the family is smart they will keep Al Sharpton at bay . He's the gasoline here to complete the recipe for the fire . As far as the police go, They've been conditioned to view all if not most minorities as the enemy . I've said this before and I'll continue to say it . If you want to be a cop you have to accept the fact that your life will be in a constant state of flux ! One day could be a good day on the beat, Then the next could be your last ! You have to be ready for that possibilty .
then Quit, it's only a job.
People quit jobs every single damn day, why is it different for cops? Maybe it's the power?
And, the great Reverend Al Sharpton hardly said a word in the show. He didn't coach any answers nor did he interrupt.
Until we get off this Us Vs them mentality, then we will see real change.
and, the most dangerous job is not being a cop, HARDLY. But they want you to think otherwise.
"hmmm... sean bell was in between jobs and paultre is collecting unemployment. two kids to feed and throwing a big party. something does not sound right."
Yeah, and and that something is you. While you're at it, where's your astute judgment of the cop who handles his job pressure so well he unloaded a couple of clips into unarmed men that night?
"Sharpton did say during the interview that they would be fighting this incident even if all the police officers involved were black, but pointed out that these excessive shootings only seem to happen in black communities."
Really? Could that be because the crime, drugs annd illegal guns are most prevalant in this area. Could it be that the cops were white because black men arent the people applying to be policemen, and if they are I'm sure they dont want to patrol that area of town.
When wll the supposed leaders like Sharpton call for his own people to police themselves? To shun the criminal element from within. How come Sharpton only shows up when there is the potential of dollar signs?
Lets face it the cops were dumb and thoughtless! Why didnt they just let the drive by shooting occur and let some body else get killed and this entire story would be a whole turnaround. They wouldve caught up with them sooner or later on the drug bust anyway. I wonder who would be the victims then. Dumb move by NYPD especially with the history behind Kalua's. His friends didnt make the situation much positive by shouting "Yo go get my gun".
RIP sean bell
