Caroline Woolard's Subway Swing

Have you seen Caroline Woolard's giant tin can telephone, the blue seats she placed around town as part of the ConFlux festival...or found some of her released hair?

If you don't already know her, this artist creates "platforms for experience". Above, you can watch a clip from her (genius!) subway swing project. From her blog:

"Here is my swing for the subway, disguised as a bag. With 1000 mesh "L-train grey" cordura, webbing, sliders, hooks, velcro, and snaps, I constructed a bag using industrial sewing machines (with help from Greg Thompson). The bag transforms from a backpack, handbag, or book bag of 11x4x12 to a swing of 11x24x2 with adjustable (25" to 50"max) straps that hook around the handrail of the subway. If you want one, I am accepting commissions."

We're thinking about commissioning her for one of those, though we'd imagine it would be frowned upon on the F train during rush hour. You can check out her work in person, tonight through December 12th at Cooper Union Foundation Building, 2nd Floor [7 E 7th Street]. From 6 to 8pm.

First of all, Yes I am smart ! Thank you for noticing that fact Jeremy . Secondly, All that was stated in my post is fact . It's just dumb, Thirdly, Tommy we being the mature adults here are poking fun at this and other dumbass stunts like it because it's stupid ! Where not hating on the "Artistic value " of this woman's wily spirit . Were just stating the obvious here, Furthermore, She's grown from what I see . I think that makes her a woman and not a "Girl" !

Gothamist has the most negative commenters on the 'net. You guys are really amazing. A girl made a subway swing and posted a video of it. Awesome. How can you not think that a swing on a nearly empty subway car isn't a cool, fresh use of the space? It's fun. It's funny. She had fun and at least one stranger did too. There's not much else to say about it. It cracks me up that every cool thing that gets posted here on Gothamist is promptly hated on by commenters.

  • Of course this was on the L tr

Of course this was on the L train.

  • Stevennnn

Where could I get one of those swings? It sounds and looks like fun!

I'd go do it on the 4 train from Woodlawn down to lower Manhattan.

Shmurf, get over yourself, you overly litigious twit. So many Law and Order Nazis in this town -- you'd think it'd be a bit cleaner.

Anyway, I agree that as art, this is stupid. As fun, it's, well, fun. And rather harmless at that.

  • Shmurf

LOL, Kojak you got jokes ! To all you knuckleheads that think this stunt is "Cool". Your probably into Skydiving, Train surfing, slicing yourselves, Wearing colors that don't match, Like Brown,Green & Pink (To show your individuality no doubt) among other things . This is not cool, IT's stupid, and a crime !

  • Shmurf

I say the following with a deeply pondered train of thought.................Some people in this city are truly stupid ! The chick in the video just looks like she's high of oxygen ! I mean come on people . I wish the MTA would sue these fools for endangering themselves, Other passengers, and Vandalizing public property . That would be a worthy lawsuit by the City, & State . Wishful thinking I guess !

  • The things people do for a seat.

Looked like harmless fun to me.

  • anonymass

Sorry to be cynical but I'm just waiting for the inevitable lawsuit when that thing breaks.

  • ax

as a fun gimmick, i love it! as 'art' i think it's lazy.

  • andrew

    freaking hipsters.

  • Gwinny

One more for the non-hater side. I would totally want to try this on an empty train. It's goofy, harmless and fun - what's the big f'ing deal?

  • Jeremy Sapienza

Oh my god, you bitter douchebags, this is awesome. What is wrong with you? As long as it's not on a crowded train, why should it bother anyone? Oh I see, because being a native New Yorker means replacing your yard with concrete -- not having fun.

  • Elderta

Jojo... no, only YOU are promoting that stereotype.

  • lew

Ok, after the cops finish beating down those Critical Mass asshats (you know, loser white guys with dreadlocks) I hope they come after this idiot.

  • chel

Oh my god, I want one!

  • jg

looks fun to me - better than when i ride the L to work.

  • Dan

yeah geez, whats wrong with you buzzkills. that looks like a lot of fun.

  • Kojak

This is one of the rare cases where I would approve of police brutality.
