Drunk Driver Kills Cyclist on West Side Bike Path

2006_12_ericng.jpgLast night, an NYU graduate bicycling on the West Side Highway's bike path was killed by a drunk driver. Police say that 27 year old Eugenio Cidron turned onto the bike path after attending a party at Chelsea Piers after 9:30PM. According to the Daily News, Cidron's white BMW hit 22 year old Eric Ng so hard that his "bicycle and one of his black Converse All Stars flew onto the adjacent West Side Highway." The accident was near Clarkson Street; if Cidron was initially parked near Chelsea Piers, that means he was on the bike path for more than a mile!

The police told the Daily News, "This [driver] wasn't supposed to be here in the first place. He was drunk, and he was really going." Cidron remained at the scene and was arrested when he failed a sobriety test. Another thing - how are people still drinking and driving?

Ng was a New York City Teaching Fellow and was teaching in Brooklyn (photo from his MySpace page). During the summer, Henry Nacht was killed by an NYPD tow truck while biking on the West Side Highway bike path; in the fall, Joshua Crouch was killed while crossing the West Side Highway at night.

could that even be considered a comeback? What is he/she responding to? Is raj all for the killing of innocent cyclists?

  • GM

Nothing excuses drinking and driving. Whether or not Eugenio Cidron was a good man is irrelevant to the fact that he killed an innocent man that night. He may be a good man but he's obviously not a smart man. His poor judgement costed Eric Ng his life that night and nothing can be said to excuse that.

P.S. raj. worsham - watch your language. You're obviously not smart enough to make an intelligent comeback, so stop leaving foul and derogatory comments!

David, I am sorry, I feel no compassion or sympathy for your friend. I have done plenty of stupid things in my life, I have gotten so drunk that I couldn't see straight or remember my name, but I never got into a car and tried to drive it when I was in that state.

Your friend was coming from a company party that he had probably known about for a few weeks. He knew there was obviously going to be a lot of free liquor at the party. If he knew he was going to be drinking he should have taken the subway to work that day, there are plenty of trains that go to and from Queens at all times of day and night. He got so drunk that he didn't even realize he drove down what is clearly a blocked off path, he drove so fast that his victim flew 50 feet in the air. His poor judgment cost someone their entire life. Eric Ng will never get to have a wife or 2 kids or the career he worked so hard for because your friend drove drunk. His family is going to have to spend the holidays without him because your friend couldn't take a cab like the rest of us do when we go drinking.

Eric was headed to a party that night. He was probably going to do some drinking of his own. The difference was, he was riding a bike and my guess is, he was probably going to crash at someone's house or take the subway home.

I know plenty of people who drive. If they drink they are so careful about sobering up before they attempt to drive. If your friend had done the same, Eric would still be alive, teaching children and having the kind of fun that a 22 year old kid in NYC should have.

  • Dewars?

Why is there a Dewars ad on the "Drunk Driver Kills Cyclist" story? Seems like a poor choice.

First, let me start by saying that this is a sad story. My condolences to his family and friends.

This story saddens me to know someone inncent had to lose his life.

Second, Im hear to set the story a little straight. He does not live in the east village anymore. He lives in queens and nobody really knows what happen that night but whats in black white. The westside highway has had this happen before, like twice before this one and even by the NYPD.Eugenio Cidron is a friend of mine and is a very good person. He has a wife and two beautiful kids who now have to see xmas without him. Its sad that this had to happen but this was an a very bad accident. Anyone who knows him knows he would not do this on purpose. He is a gentle person who always has everyone in mind. This the first time he ever did something like this. Now if convicted; which he will, will lose everything hes worked so hard for. His job, his career, house and his wife and kids...so it will be safe to say he would be dead to the world as well...just the fact that he killed someone will be on his conscious forever and will probably never drink or drive again. I would never wish this on no one but, this happen to the wrong people in both parties...God works in mysterious ways...My prayers go out to both families...

Where's this mother fucker live? And where's his car at. I'm tired of getting mad and waiting three weeks to have 45 hippies with nubby tires and lids lighting candles at city hall.

Fight! back. Open some eyes. The streets are safe for riders if the riders stop playing the victim.

    To serp:

You obviously don't ride so you wouldn't understand. That could have been any of us. Keep your smart-ass comments to yourself. If you don't like vociferous left-wing people, move to Oklahoma. Or Hoboken.

First of all it's spelled "Bubba." I should know. Second of all, this is all President Bush's fault. We should hold a protest for that too! Also people who eat meat are causing accidents everywhere. If tons of animal meant didn't have to be shipped into the city, do you know how much congestion that would alleviate?! Republicans and meat-eaters are ruining our city! For Christ-sakes this guy was driving a BMW. Obviously a real degenerate. Probably voted for Bush and ate a burger on the same day.

Maybe we can lobby for tax breaks for people who ride bikes instead of owning cars?!

I hope the gentleman that was killed rests peacefully even if many are making a self righteous hay-day of his death.

Once Bloomberg is done selling firehouses maybe he could look into making "his" city a place where someone could do something as simple as, say, ride a bike without getting crushed by some rude, selfish, pig of a human being.

  • c

probably one of the nicest people i've ever met. seriously awful loss for the bike community. eric will be sorely missed by all.

    peace.

There's a bike path from Philly to Valley Forge?

that is so cool. I remember doing doing some work there and traffic from valley forge to philly for a meal was crazy during rush hour.

  • John

In his post, Tom Wrote, "Stuff like this will happen regardless of how you try and 'protect' the bike path." I disagree.

When I lived in Philadelphia, I used to ride on the Schuylkill River Bike Path from Philly to Valley Forge. The bike path has existed for over twenty years, but there have never been any accidents involving car/bike collisions on the trail. The bike path is designed so it's impossible for cars to get on the bike path. Likewise, there are simple, effective steps that could be taken here in NYC to prevent cars from accidentally (or intentionally) getting onto the Manhattan Greenway.

i agree. it's absolutely time for a demonstration. enough is enough!

  • God, have you read the comments on his myspace page? It's just the saddest, eeriest thing. It really brings home how one minute you're this irreverent kid having the time of his life and the next minute you're out. Life is so precious. That's what I take from this story. And this city is too dangerous for bikers and skaters. I got hit by a NJ Waterways bus leaving its station on the water because a fucking armored truck was parked ON THE BIKE LANE obscuring my view of the light and the bus and vice versa. The illegal parking that goes on in this town will kill more peds than anything.

  • mike

The "Westside Highway" is actually West St, and it is completely legal to ride a bike on below 57th St (the non-elevated portion). So this is one option if enough cyclists are into it. No permit *should* be required if we're bicycling.

  • Jacob

I'm down for a demonstration especially if we march/ride down the westend highway.
