Could the Jets Have a Better Record Than the Giants?

2006_08_sjetslogo.jpgIf this were baseball, fans of both teams would care about the other. But it's football, and Jets fans don't worry as much about being better than the Giants as Mets fans worry about topping the Yankees. Both New York teams stand at 6-5, and the Jets travel to Green Bay, where it's never easy to win in December. Despite an up-and-down season, they're only a game out of a wild card spot for the playoffs, but they'll need things to break right for that to be more than a pipe dream.

Everyone loves to point out how much better Chad Pennington plays in Jets wins than he does in losses. What team's quarterback doesn't play better in wins? On the other side of the ball, the team needs to play better defense against the run. The Jets have nine sacks -- and have allowed only 35 points -- over the last three games, but their rush defense is ranked 26th in the NFL. The unit's also allowed 13 touchdowns, tied for the worst mark in the league. Sunday's game won't turn on Pennington as much as it turns on the Jets' ability to contain Packers running back Ahman Green, who has only 127 rushing yards in the past three games.

Amazing turn of events when you think about it: the Jets, in December, have a better shot at the postseason than the Giants. Seriously, if the Giants lose to Dallas Sunday then ponder this: are they good enough to beat Carolina,New Orleans or Washington (at home)? That Tenn. loss was intolerable and shows this team really hasn't changed much from the '02 gang of chokers.

All the Jets do is break our hearts. So now here they stand, once again hoping it's the QB who carries them to postseason glory. Let's face it, no one had this high hopes for the team, except perhaps Mangini in his secret heart. But after 4 wins last season they got a much easier schedule and have thrived under it. Can they win 10 games? No... 9 wins, possible but if that gets them in the playoffs is anyone's guess. But watch again as Pennington breaks our hearts with a late costly pick or fumble. What's up with these NY QB's? HOW many days til pitchers and catchers?

The Giants should play for the draft pick. Replace the retirees.
