No MTA Fare Hikes in 2007

2006_11_mta.jpgThe MTA board sources tell the Daily News that fare hikes in 2007 are unlikely for buses, subways, Metro-North, and the LIRR. Hooray - previously it was thought that a fare hike could come next September, but now you can thank the strong real estate economy for adding to the MTA's coffers.

The MTA's 2007 financial plans will be unveiled today and are to be approved next month. The only thing is that we'll probably have a fare hike in 2008, given the MTA's dire financial situation (a projected deficit of nearly $1 billion in 2008).

But there is some good news: There won't be that $20 million in service cuts, an idea floated in September. One board member said, "The board is vehemently opposed to service cuts. The board would rather have a fare increase than service cuts." Which makes sense, since monthly subway ridership has been been the highest since 1970, when the MTA started keeping track of monthly numbers. The NY Times reports that 5.076 million people rode the subways on an average weekday in September (subway and bus ridership was a 7.61 million for an average weekday). So you aren't going crazy for thinking your subway rides have been a little more crowded.

Hey remember the strike that was so much fun.

No fare increase is noce to hear I just wish the ceiling at the atlantic/pacific stop would get fixed on the NDR platform whenever it rains ti comes down in chunks.

They should double the price of Mass Transit so everyone will be forced to ride their bikes to work.

Wasn't it just yesterday the MTA said they had to reduce the scope of the Fulton St. station because they didn't have the $15 million it would cost? Yet today they magically find enough money to eliminate a projected deficit of $240 million?

wait according to my calculations from the above information, on the subways alone, the MTA rakes in $2.6 billion a year. leaving the LIRR, Metro North and city buses which i'm sure in another few billion dollars... how can they project a deficit of $1billion? it doesn't add up.

edEx, you're not counting the cost of labor, maintenance, equipment, construction, etc. etc.

The subway is public transportation. It should not make a profit. It should be subsidized. That is why we pay taxes.

I often wonder how much the MTA spends (wastes) on in-house advertising. All those ridiculous, fearmongering "see something say something" ads, the equally pointless lost and found ads, ("Hey, I left my prosthetic leg on the subway") and so forth.

jen, i was just counting gross.

the subway is not 100% public. It's a public/private company, that's why they're allowed to search you before and after you're inside the turnstiles.

Wasn't there supposed to be holiday Metrocards again this year? I remember last year, the MTA allocated part of that surplus for the discounts in 2006. What happened?

How is "if you see something say something" fearmongering? Do you want people to be complacent? Or would you rather have people ignore their surroundings and just install cameras everywhere? I thought it takes a village.

i guess i will be the first one to say this is good news! personally i remain satisfied with subway service and congratulate the mta for being one of the only transit systems in the world still building subways.

i do, however, think they should start hiring young urban planning graduates like translink in vancouver, as well as having more regular public polls and surveys. the above accusations of the mta being slow and resistant to change are certainly true.

if the mta had been around in 1904, there probably would never have been a subway built at all.
