The NY Post created this graphic showing the recent increase in hit-and-run deaths this year. While 2006's death toll is not as bad as other years (2002 - yikes!), there are still a couple more weeks to go in the year. Experts say the many drivers flee because they are drunk or lack insurance and/or licenses. Many times licenses are revoked for "non-motor-vehicle violations, such as not paying child support" while other times some drivers have fake licenses. Then again, sometimes the drivers have committed crimes.
Gothamist on hit-and-run incidents.

Gotta do something about them damn cyclists. And make pedestrians wear helmets. And jail critical mass. The roads are for cars.
People never cease to amaze me. The penalties a driver will face for running down a pedestrian and fleeing the scene are much more severe than what the driver would face if he or she remained on the scene, even with a suspended or invalid license.
Wait, did you say _increase_ ????
how in the world does the post label all of these hit-and-run crashes as "accidents?"
whoopsie! i hit someone with my car. my bad. just a little accident. i'm going to leave the scene now.
maybe its time to stop using the word "accident" to automatically describe any and all automobile carnage. maybe we'd take it more seriously if we stopped calling it accident. maybe we'd start looking in to real ways to prevent this shit if they weren't all accidents. accidents, after all, you can't do anything about them....

That's not true if the driver was drunk and then turns themselves in when sober. That's why celebs are told to do that by their lawyers.
