Two weeks ago, Fauzto Lopez was on his way to his second job at the Ninth Avenue Saloon in Hell's Kitchen when two men, mistaking him for a man they earlier had an argument with, jumped him and then fatally shot him. Today, the Ninth Avenue Saloon will hold a fundraiser for his wife and four children, partly to send his body back to Mexico and partly to support the children.
The fundraiser is at the the Ninth Avenue Saloon, 656 Ninth Avenue at 46th Street, between 5PM and 10PM. There will be a $5 cover, with proceeds going to Lopez's widow Gloria Heuro. You can also mail checks made out to Gloria Heuro to Ninth Ave. Saloon, c/o Gary Reynolds, 656 Ninth Ave. New York, N.Y. 10036 and donate money at www.projectangelmom.com starting this week.
The bar's manager tells the Daily News, "He was a gem of an employee. Whenever there was something that needed to be done, he just did it. You can't ask for anything more." He added that last New Year's Day, Lopez alone scrubbed the bar which was dirty after a small fire so the bar could be ready for another day of business.

This happened a few blocks from where I live- people were gathering around the crime scene all day, first trying to find out what happened and then talkiing about how sad it all was. I hope there's a good turnout at the fundraiser.
I hope there is good turnout as well. I was there during the shooting. It makes no sense that a hard working person, who spends all of his time with family and has no time for trouble, is the one who pays for other peoples mess. This has not happened in the area for a while, and although it is midtown, it is a very close-knit community.
