Rugby Tournament on Randall's Island Tomorrow

2006_11_sny7s.jpgHoliday shopping got the best of you? Why not head out to Randall's Island tomorrow to watch some rugby at the 48th Annual NY 7s Tournament. Matches start at 8 AM and run all the way until 5:30 PM. The long list of teams (90 plus teams) participating includes teams from around the United States, Canada and Europe. There even seems to be a team all the way from Hong Kong. The NY 7s Tournament is the oldest and largest sevens tournament in the United States.

The cost to watch all these teams compete? Nothing! And with teams competing in several different divisions - social, college, over 40, club, and premier - fans are sure to see some excellent playing on the pitch.

Directions to Randall's Island and a field map can be found on the NY 7s website. For more information on the variation of rugby called sevens, there's this Wikipedia entry.

Factoid: according to Wikipedia, a typical rugby seven's game lasts about 15 minutes. According to people who've timed games with stop watches, a typical 3-hour NFL game involves only twelve minutes of actual, ball-in-play action, and of course each player plays only about half of that time.
