Happy Thanksgiving from Gothamist!

2006_11_turkeydraw.jpgWe wish you a happy Thanksgiving, however you may spend the day, whether it's on a cold, wet corner waiting to see the parade balloon and floats, traveling to your family's for a big meal, or staying in and watching football. It's our favorite holiday because it's about gathering - without any worry about gifts (maybe some worry about the sweet potatoes, though). Remember to give thanks - we're all very lucky. Here are Thanksgiving editorials from the Daily News, Post, NY Times, NY Sun and Newsday, which reminds us that on a day when food is bountiful, we should remember to give to food banks.

We're struck by yesterday's NY Times dining article, about coping with Thanksgiving meal behavior: There was no mention of passing out after eating too much or hogging the gravy! In the Times' New York Region News section today, there's a sweet article about a white family that welcomed five black and Latino boys into their family eight years ago.

Also to keep in mind: The FDNY reminds you that deep-frying turkeys is dangerous. We imagine the only New Yorkers deep-frying turkeys are ones with yards or access to commercial kitchens - deep-frying on a teeny balcony or fire escape seems pretty impossible.

And yesterday, authorities received a number of calls about a pack of wild turkeys traveling together in NJ. Seriously - they were seen at a NJ Transit train station platform. A NJ Transit spokesman said, "I have no idea how they got there. I have know idea how they left. They probably flew away."

As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly...

There's no place cooler than New York on Thanksgiving. I mean, everyone else has to watch the parade on television, but only here can you hop on a train and go watch it IN PERSON (you know, without all the cheezy acts).

I'm thankful for living in the coolest city in the world. Happy Turkey, everyone.

I went to the parade last year and it was the worst piece of crap in the entire world!!! First of all, you don't see them do shit. All you see the marchers do is march. All the singers do is wave. the only thing you see is balloons and little kids screaming. Second of all, When the marchers get to 34th street herald square they do crazy choreographed routines that are amazing and the singers belt out their songs and get everyone dancing. That's what you see on television. The Only problem is that Joe Q Public don't get to see that cause 34th street is reserved for the rich hoity toity and their offspring. Only the rich and well connected get to see anything cool at the parade. the poor only get to see marching and waving while the rich get to see singing, dancing, backflips, confetti, fireworks, brass bands, cartoons, celebrities, and all that cool stuff you see on TV. Very dissapointing.

Happy Thanksgiving, Gothamist and Gothamist readers! May we all be forced to unbotton our pants at some point today.

Ummmmm, yeah, the above bit about the pants? I mean because of eating too much. Oops.

Wild turkeys are scarcely the same species any longer than the absurdly overbred domestic birds. They're physically quite fast and limber, while the domestic ones are barely able to walk (and too fat to mate - they have to be bred via artificial insemination), and to the extent such things can be measured, are far more intelligent.

The rule of thumb I've heard for outdoor turkey fryers is at least ten feet of clear space in all directions.

the macy's parade was the biggest steaming piece of crap I have ever seen. No wonder I never watch it.
