Bread & Puppet Returns

Bread and Puppet is coming to town for the holidays! And it looks like they've got an adult show and a kids show lined up:

• "The Battle of the Terrorists and the Horrorists" (for adults):

This show contains excerpts from the Mayan Council Book, "The Popol Vuh." It features several no-no-no dances, including the "Civilians-Are-Not-The-Target-But-The-Civilians-Are-The-Target" dance, the "Air-Sea-And-Trees-Casualty" dance, the "Why-Do-They-Hate-Us-What-Have-We-Done-To-Them" dance; and one Yes-Dance, the "Sweeping-Away-Of-The-Miserable-Government" dance.

First week: Thursday through Sunday at 8:00 pm.
Subsequent weeks: Wednesdays through Sundays at 8:00 pm. Runs 1:20.

• "Everything Is Fine Circus" (for kids of all ages):
featuring Pinky, the Federal Emergency Elephant, The Rotten Idea Theater Company, The Axis of Beagle and more.

Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00 pm. Runs :55.

Not familiar with Bread and Puppet? It was founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann on the Lower East Side, and began performances on the street and at the Theater for the New City. With the first shows the concerns were rents, rats, police and other problems in the LES at the time. In 1970, Bread and Puppet set up permanant residence in Vermont - where combining puppetry with gardening and bread baking became the center of the project.

Since moving to Vermont, the Theater for the New City has been the company's New York home, and one or more productions are performed there every year. The shows are "political and spectacular, with huge puppets made of paper maché and cardboard; a brass band for accompaniment, and anti-elitist dance. Most are morality plays--about how people act toward each other--whose prototype is "Everyman." Their overall theme is universal peace." It's a melting pot of the arts, not to be missed.
