While trying to hail a cab at Bleecker and LaGuardia Place around 1:30AM on Sunday, a 23 year old woman was grabbed by a man and taken into his car. He raped her and then dropped her off on East 46th Street, where she called the police. According to a Daily News source, the victim said there were at least two people in the car, but could only say that a white male had pulled her in. A bartender at nearby Alibi told the Post, "This neighborhood is usually safe. I'm shocked."
And also on Sunday, an 80 year old woman was sexually assaulted in the Bronx. A livery cab driver offered the woman a ride from the bus stop, but threatened her with a screwdriver and assaulted her. The Post says the attacker "inexplicably gave her a cellphone number before dropping her on Southern Boulevard and speeding off." (The police are tracing the number.)
While the police say that the two incidents are unrelated, WABC 7 wonders if the vehicles in both attacks were livery cabs.

bleecker and laguardia? damn! that's a step away from a ton of bars and restaurants... how could this have happened? I cannot believe she wasn't kicking and screaming in an attempt at gettin someones attention, it's usually pretty populated in that area... even on sunday night...
LaGuardia is totally deserted at 1:30am on Sundays. Please. She should have gone to an avenue for a cab at that hour, but was probably too lazy or drunk.
"LaGuardia is totally deserted at 1:30am on Sundays. Please. She should have gone to an avenue for a cab at that hour, but was probably too lazy or drunk."
Oh well, then it was totally her fault. Dick.
Gee, Larry, as long as we're spouting useless comments about what people should or shouldn't have done, maybe the guy just shouldn't have raped her. Try that one instead of your victim blaming.
Classy, Larry. Classy.
She should have gone to an avenue for a cab at that hour, but was probably too lazy or drunk.
I would like to think we live in a world where a woman can hail a cab on LaGuardia and not get raped. It doesn't seem to be asking too much. Larry, as your conscious, I think you should apologize for your previous idiotic comment.
Larry - I'm sure by "1:30 on Sunday" the writer meant 1:30 on Saturday night. So, no, that area isn't even remotely deserted at that time. I don't know about the rest of you, but I, too, hail cabs off of avenues so as to avoid waiting 15 minutes to hail one. Jackass.
Guys, uhm, I think Larry knows that he's a douche - someone like that has to know deep down, no matter what rhetoric or bullshit they spew that they are on a lower level. PERIOD.
You guys don't get it, Larry was "trolling" - a common practice by bloggers to increase the traffic on their site.
That is such a weird area. You turn a corner and suddenly you're alone. I was over there at 11pm on Saturday and found that I was walking very fast and looking over my shoulder. Those little side streets are a predator's dream. Poor girl.
Even if Larry was trolling, he brings up a valid point, albeit in a nasty way.
Never, never try to hail a livery cab. First of all, it's against TLC regulations for livery cabs to stop for hails. They are supposed to be dispatched. This is mainly for their own safety, but it can also help prevent incidents like this. If you can't find a yellow cab, call 212-777-7777 to have a livery cab dispatched to your location.
While no woman is at fault for a sexual assualt, we should always protect ourselves by being aware and alert. It's no consolation to say to yourself, "At least it wasn't my fault."
Alexia, you seem to be mixing up the two assault stories in the post. There is no indication in the first story that the woman was trying to hail a livery cab.
That's my old neighborhood (literally, about two blocks from my old apartment) - it always felt quite safe to me. I lived there for three years and never heard of any major incidents in the immediate vicinity. I was absolutely shocked to see the location of this assault.
How terrifying. And how awful :(.
Jesus, Somebody raped an [80]yr. old woman? That's horrible, I hope they find the guy responsible . That's someone's Grandmaother !
